Plug-In Hybrids

You never know what you may find if you read through public comments on government proposals. That's how we found a broad hint that the next version of the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid will have a continuous all-electric range of at least 10 miles. That's because the output of its electric drive motor is low enough that it has to switch on its engine at one point during the test cycle, even though the battery pack has not yet been depleted, to maintain the...

A Million Electrified Cars In Germany By 2020? Achievable, Says VWLike many countries, Germany has set itself some pretty tough targets for encouraging electric vehicles. Volkswagen's XL1 might be one of the most exciting and unusual green vehicles of recent years, but it's certainly not one of the most accessible. Pricing around the $150,000 mark, based on the German price of 111,000 Euros, puts it in the same league as high-end sports cars. But as we've come to expect with the rare and the bespoke, there'll always be someone out there who doesn't mind paying for something exclusive. It comes as no surprise that demand is outstripping supply for the sleek 261 mpg XL1. According to Inautonews, VW has more customers for the car than its 200-unit production run...

After a record-setting month in August, plug-in electric car sales moderated in September while the overall U.S. vehicle market surged. The Chevrolet Volt, the best-selling plug-in car after almost three years, registered 1,766 deliveries--little more than half the record-setting number of 3,351 sold in August. That brings its year-to-date sales total to 17,760. The Nissan Leaf battery-electric car logged sales of 1,953, for a nine-month total of 16,076--less than 700 units behind the Volt.
