Fuel Efficiency

It's working. Concerted efforts by automakers to meet new, more stringent fuel-economy requirements are gradually driving up the efficiency of new passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. A report from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute pegged the average gas mileage of new vehicles sold during March at 24.1 miles per gallon. It's the first time the measure has exceeded 24 mpg. The March figure is 0.2 mpg better than in February, when the average was 23.9 mpg, and 0.5 mpg better than the January figure, at 23.6 mpg. The institute first began monitoring sales-weighted...

2013 Ram 1500 Pickup Truck: Same Looks, Much Better Mileage (Video)The New York Auto Show, now open to the public, occupies two floors of the Javits Convention Center, and organizers this year were strict about relegating trucks to the basement. Chrysler was allowed only a single truck or crossover in its entire main-floor display. So it chose the 2013 Ram 1500...

65 MPG Split-Cycle The Next Direction For Gasoline Engines?Like it or not, the humble gasoline engine still has a lot to give to the automobile world. Yes, they use fossil fuels that could be better used elsewhere, but while pure electric vehicles and even hybrids remain relatively expensive, improving the efficiency of regular internal combustion engines...

Electric cars get a lot of press, and they'll increase in number--slowly--over the next decade. But more efficient gasoline engines are what will drive the increase in fuel efficiency for U.S. vehicles over the next decade. We've written many times about smaller, more efficient engines, and in a nutshell, that's how cars will get better gas mileage while still providing the performance, features, and safety that buyers expect and demand. A perfect example of this is an announcement last week by Ford that it was converting its 285,000-square-foot Advanced Engineering Center building in...

2013 Ford Fusion Start-Stop System Priced At Just $295Ford has announced pricing for the stop-start system on the 2013 Ford Fusion. Usually a system fitted to hybrid vehicles, the Fusion is the first non-hybrid midsize sedan available with stop-start technology, which cuts the engine at a standstill to save gas. Ford claims the system improves...

52 MPG At 70 MPH? No, Not In A Prius--In A Porsche PanameraSteady-speed highway cruising doesn't actually take that much energy compared to accelerating up to, say, 70 mph in the first place. The really hard part is getting consistently high gas mileage in all driving conditions--which is why the 50-mpg Toyota Prius hybrid is still a remarkable vehicle...

Chevy To Get Compact Crossover Version Of Buick Encore? If you want to cover all of the potential new car sales bases, having a compact crossover vehicle is essential. Mazda sank serious development money into its CX-5, as did Ford with its new Escape. Radical changes were necessary for those makers to compete against the new Honda CR-V, and even MINI...

More Efficient Cars, More Domestic Energy: It's Working (Despite Gas Prices)It still hasn't really registered in public awareness, but as we've said before, U.S. gasoline consumption has been falling since 2006. Now, it turns out that U.S. energy imports have been falling as well--from 60 percent in 2005 to just 45 percent last year. That can be attributed to two factors...

2012 Chevrolet Sonic Turbo Finally Gets Automatic OptionChevy's Sonic marked a huge step up in quality and performance from its Aveo predecessor, but until now customers wanting the automatic transmission have been denied the turbocharged engine, and turbo fans have only had a manual option. That's set to change, as Chevrolet is now offering its...

It's not just how efficiently you burn it--it's the stuff you're burning, too. That's the message coming from the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, working with the EPA to tighten pollution rules for gasoline, reducing the proportion of sulfur from 30 parts per million (ppm) to 10 ppm. The oil refiners don't want to play ball just yet though. Bloomberg reports that the American Petroleum Institute (API) is pushing the EPA to delay the tighter rules, lest the cost of improving the fuel be passed on to the consumer. Carmakers are keen to see the new, cleaner fuel rules passed, as it allows...

Ford Offers Fleet Buyers Tool To Compare Total Emissions & CostsFleet managers are very, very rational people. Unlike many retail car buyers, they analyze vehicles without a shred of emotion, basing their decisions on lifetime ownership costs for vehicles that meet their needs. More and more, though, those fleet buyers are being asked to help reduce their...

Cross-Country On 2 Gallons Of Gas? Sorta, But Not ReallyIf we told you someone had driven across the U.S. on only two gallons of gas, you'd probably be quite impressed. Cliff Ricketts did just this. After around 2,582 miles and with a support team, he used only 2.15 gallons of gasoline. That doesn't tell the whole story though, because Cliff used other...

We all understand what miles-per-gallon means for a gasoline car. And we can readily grasp the range in miles of an electric car. But when a car has both a gasoline engine and an electric motor, things can get complicated. The standard 2012 Toyota Prius is rated at 50 miles per gallon, and at best it has 1 mile or so of all-electric range (under light acceleration up to, say, 30 mph). But the new 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid has a larger lithium-ion battery pack that plugs into a wall socket to recharge (in about 3 hours), giving it a multiple of that electric range. It doesn't...

Gas, Hybrid, Diesel, Electric: What Do They Cost Over 5 Yrs?So you're in the market for a new car. Fantastic. But what will that car really cost over, say, five years of ownership?...

China Slows On Electric Cars To Focus On Fuel EfficiencySeveral years ago, the U.S. auto industry worried that Chinese carmakers would use inexpensive cars to gain a foothold here, just as Japanese and Korean makers had done. That hasn't happened, for many reasons--one being that making cars good enough to sell here is remarkably hard. More recently...

Has Mazda Come Full Circle With Rotary Engine Fuel Economy? You may have noticed we feature the late Mazda RX-8 rather less often than the Chevrolet Volt range-extended electric car. Considering the final iteration of the four-seat, four-door sports car delivered just 23 mpg highway from its 1.3-liter Renesis rotary engine, it really wasn’t a green...

Lexus RX 450h Drive To Geneva: What (MPG)'ll She Do, Mister? Before we were handed the keys to the 2012 Lexus RX 450h AWD, we were advised that although the luxury SUV would be a comfortable companion, freeway driving isn't the best test for a hybrid vehicle. Or is it? After all, we already know that hybrids work best in city driving, but low tailpipe...
