I took a short test drive yesterday in the Chevrolet Volt, GM’s range-extended vehicle that can go 25 to 50 miles on battery power before switching over to gas. (Note: we’ll have videos up soon, so check back in this space.) The Volt will go into production in mid-November and hit dealerships a few weeks later, just in time to compete with the all-electric Nissan Leaf and, to a lesser extent, the all-electric sedan offered by startup Coda. All three cars offer a 100,000-mile/eight-year warranty to alleviate consumer concerns about battery lifespans. (And all three are only...

Once again, Chevrolet has upped planned production volumes of its 2011 Volt electric car in the face of strong demand and the likelihood that many dealers have more buyers than cars to sell them. In July, at a media event discussing launch markets and other details, Volt marketing manager Tony DiSalle said the company would build 10,000 Volts by the end of 2011. He also said that 45,000 Volts--up from 30,000--would be built in 2012. Now, the number by the end of 2011 has risen from a flat 10,000 to a range of "10,000 to 15,000." And for 2012, the company may build as many as 60,000 Volts...

Video: Charging The 2011 Chevrolet VoltFor some reason, while none of us think twice about plugging in our mobile phones to recharge overnight, the prospect of plugging in a car makes some people very nervous. It's all about the Volt today, for better and for worse. On the "worse" side is the tempest in a teapot that erupted today, ably dismantled by more thoughtful commentators, over whether General Motors had "lied" about the drivetrain of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. In brief, GM revealed today that the Volt, previously described as a range-extended electric car, also has a power mode in which the gasoline engine can provide mechanical torque that blends with the electric drive motor's torque to power the front wheels. The advantage, says GM, is an increase in efficiency of 10 to 15 percent at...

Four Ways To Combate Long-Distance Electric Car Range AnxietyRange Anxiety, or the fear that an electric car will run out of charge before it reaches its destination, has to be the ultimate boogeyman of the electric car world. 2011 Chevrolet Volt: Electric Drive ImpressionsIn one light, it was nothing more than a drive in a new car on a sunny autumn afternoon. We know all about the new 240-volt upgraded charger for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, and we're even more familiar with the standard 120-volt unit. But it's one thing to read about them and another to see them in action. Perhaps most interesting is the new upgraded 240-volt charger and how it looks on the wall in the example garage. It's a fairly clean installation and the compact size of the charger means it will fit in essentially any garage. As for the process of charging itself, if you've used a cellphone, laptop, vacuum cleaner, toaster, or pretty much any other appliance, you know the...
