While the Tesla Model 3 and Chevrolet Bolt EV have gotten the lion's share of electric-car press lately, the Nissan Leaf remains the best-selling plug-in vehicle in history. The 200,000th Leaf was sold globally sometime in January, putting the electric hatchback at roughly twice the volume of any other plug-in electric car to date. How I got a new 2015 Nissan Leaf electric car for $16K net: indecisionSometimes my liberal environmentalist side fights with my fiscally conservative side, and my decision-making suffers as a result. I’ve wanted an electric car for the past 30 years. But in the 1980s, they were conversions with lead-acid batteries that were both expensive and impractical. Later...

Nissan said yesterday it will invest £26.5 million ($37.9 million) in its battery plant in Sunderland, England, to produce "advanced" battery cells for the next-generation Leaf electric car. The announcement may end rumors that Nissan would outsource production of lithium-ion cells and perhaps even battery packs for the next Leaf to giant Korean maker LG Chem. Nissan Europe's press release, however, did not offer specifics of the cell chemistry--and it did not mention current cell supplier AESC, Nissan's lithium-ion cell joint venture with Japanese computer giant NEC. Most of those owners would likely agree that not having to deal with cords and charging ports would be another great step forward, however. Soon, if Nissan and several other automakers have their way, that day will come, as wireless (inductive) charging systems and smart charging controls will take away that “hands on” obligation—provided you park in designated charging spots.
