Cadillac's ATS could prove to be one of 2012's most important cars, particularly for General Motors. Going head-to-head with the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the ATS will need to perform at stratospheric levels in all disciplines to match the talents of the German duo. It will also need to be economical, and GM President Mark Reuss has confirmed that a diesel-engined variant of the ATS will appear within its first lifecycle. The news was revealed on Twitter by GM's product and technology PR, Jason Laird. Details for the diesel model are slim at the moment, but the engine will join...

No, The Electric Cadillac ELR Will NOT Have Rear-Wheel DriveWe follow plug-in cars pretty closely here, and occasionally we manage to break stories. One was the production green light for the Cadillac Converj electric car concept, confirmed by GM as the Cadillac ELR coupe just six days later. So when we see an article that's ... let's say implausible ...

Cadillac Seriously Considers Producing Clean Diesel Engines, Possibly For U.S.When it comes to large luxury sedans and SUVs, many car buyers are now choosing to swap high-capacity gasoline engines for the latest generation of high-mileage, clean-diesel engines from German automakers like BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Now Cadillac, General Motor’s luxury brand, has...

Txchnologist: Thorium lasers: Thoroughly plausible for nuclear carsSome proposed technological innovations seem so far out that they are easy to reject out of hand. But sometimes, a new idea has a kernel of plausibility. Such is the case with a new project to develop a thorium laser power generation system that its creator says could provide electricity for the...

Cadillac ELR Plug-In Cost: Less Than Tesla Model S, More Than VoltWhen the Cadillac ELR extended-range plug-in car goes on sale, probably in 2013 as a 2014 model, it's a given that it will cost more than the 2012 Chevy Volt. But how much more? In the spate of reports late yesterday covering GM's announcement yesterday that its 2009 Cadillac Converj concept would...

Sometimes, like Lazarus, dead cars rise again. We've learned from an inside source at General Motors, a person close to the project, that the electric Cadillac Converj luxury coupe is now back in the GM product plan. The Converj was recently approved for production by GM product executives. It will likely launch in 2013 as a 2014 model, though it may end up with a Cadillac-style three-letter model name. The production version will feature, says our source, "a Generation 1.5 Voltec" powertrain. That would be an updated version of the extended-range electric powertrain from the 2011 Chevrolet...

A123 Gets Lithium-Cell Deal For Unspecified GM Electric CarAnother shoe dropped today, revealing one more little piece of General Motors' electric-car strategy. GM said this morning it had awarded a production contract for nanophosphate lithium-ion cells to A123 Systems, to be used in "future GM electric vehicles" that will be "announced at a later date"...

What Really Killed The Cadillac SRX Plug-In? It's ComplicatedWhen a major automaker cancels an innovative plug-in hybrid vehicle program, that's big news. If it's General Motors, that goes double, given the politics that continue to swirl around GM's bankruptcy and the U.S. government's ongoing ownership of part of the company. So it was news when...

Cadillac SRX Plug-In Hybrid Crossover: Killed Before Birth? It may be the most star-crossed program in recent automotive history, and now it's apparently dead. According to Reuters, General Motors has canceled work on the planned plug-in hybrid version of its Cadillac SRX crossover sport utility. The canceled SRX plug-in would have been the second GM car...

2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe Wins Rocky Mountain Automotive Press New Vehicle AwardThe Cadillac brand has seen a lot of change over the last decade and the good news is most of it is positive. Sure we saw the loss of the XLR from the list of family group models, but overall the brand has been moving onward and upward. The Rocky Mountain Automotive Press (RMAP), an organization of...

Small Cadillac Takes Big Honors From AutoWeekCadillac isn’t known for producing small cars, but that may be changing for the brand that was once called the “Standard of the World.” The Cadillac CTS coupe is a foray into a new market for Cadillac. That isn’t to say that the company hasn’t ever produced coupes...

Among car buyers, none of the four surviving General Motors brands are really associated with hybrid vehicles. Now that customer deliveries have started for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric car, GM's other brands will need some green cred too. What's the future of GM's Two-Mode Hybrid system for medium and large vehicles? Who gets hybrids? And if Chevy now has the Volt, which GM brand becomes the lead for regular and plug-in hybrids? We think it'll be Cadillac. Here's why. Buick: no H-word Buick has no hybrids at all. Instead, for 2012, it will offer its LaCrosse midsize sedan...

Range Rover Decides Hybrids Make Most Sense For Gas GuzzlersThe 2012 Range Rover Evoque--the stylish new baby "soft-roader" that's Land Rover's smallest-ever luxury vehicle--will not be offered with a hybrid-electric version to improve its gas mileage. That's the word from John Edwards, Land Rover's global brand director, who noted that in Europe, the...

The 2011 Chevy Volt: Made Alongside GM's Gas-Guzzling V8sThink of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and very little seems conventional about it. With a range of 40 miles per charge and a range-extending gasoline engine used to provide extra power when the battery pack is depleted, Chevrolet is keen to push the car’s green credentials. Built at the Hamtramck...

GM Greens Its Auto ACs With Greenhouse-Gas-Friendly CoolantAmong the many substances emitted by autos back in the "good old days" were the refrigerant gases that would leak from older auto air conditioners. Freon, also known as R-12, was replaced starting in the early 1990s with R-134a, which did less damage to the ozone layer. Now concern has expanded to...

Two-Mode Hybrid System: GM's Larry Nitz on Lessons LearnedThe Two-Mode Hybrid system for large sport utilities and trucks hasn't exactly set the world on fire. In 2006, General Motors, Daimler and Chrysler (then a single company) announced a partnership, soon joined by BMW, to develop the Two-Mode Hybrid system for large rear-wheel drive vehicles. But...

Our reader Celeste wrote to ask us about available hybrid SUVs and crossovers, and we thought our answer might be useful for the site. At the moment, there are three main hybrid SUVs sold in the U.S. Each of them also has variations sold under other brands. All are likely to be durable, as their powertrains must be warrantied in some states for 10 years and 150,000 miles. Their mileage will vary depending on your "duty cycle." Hybrids are at their most fuel efficient in lower-speed and stop-and-go traffic, when their ability to switch off the engine on stops and run short distances solely on...

Green-Car Tip: Hybrid Vehicles Get Discounts, Incentives TooWhile the auto industry in general offers an average incentive of more than $1,000 off the sticker price of any new vehicle, many buyers somehow assume this doesn't apply to hybrids. Oh, but it does. You can get money off pretty much any hybrid out there at the moment, since gasoline prices are far...

2010 Detroit Auto Show: Cadillac XTS Concept Revives GM's Plug-In Hybrid HopesSay "luxury hybrid," and very few people think of Cadillac. Sure, the Escalade Hybrid large luxury sport-utility vehicle has been around for a few years, but Cadillac has no hybrid sedans. That may be about to change, if the Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept unveiled this morning at the Detroit Auto...

Green Car Sales: Winners and Losers of 2009It's beginning to look as if the worst is over for U.S. auto sales. The year that just closed was, in the immortal words of Queen Elizabeth II, an annus horribilis, with only 10.4 million vehicles sold, down 21 percent on 2008 and the lowest total since 1982. But some light seems to be appearing on...
