Both new 2016 Land Rover diesel models will carry a $1,500 premium over their respective base gasoline versions.

The 2016 Land Rover Range Rover Td6 will start at $87,445, while the 2016 Range Rover Sport Td6 will start at $67,445. All prices include destination.

In addition to those base models, both Range Rover variants will be offered in higher-level HSE trim, which bumps prices to $94,445 for the Range Rover and $72,445 for the Range Rover Sport.

Unveiled at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, both models use the same 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6, which produces 254 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque.

There's also only one transmission option--an eight-speed automatic--and in typical Land Rover fashion, four-wheel drive is standard.

Land Rover claims the diesel improves fuel economy by 32 percent compared to the base 3.0-liter supercharged gasoline V-6.

Official EPA fuel-economy figures aren't available yet, but Land Rover estimates both models will achieve 25 mpg combined (22mpg city, 28 mpg highway).

That's not quite enough to match the 27 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 31 mpg highway) of the 2015 BMW X5 xDrive35d, but it compares favorably with current diesel versions of the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz ML-Class.

The 2015 Audi Q7 TDI is rated at 22 mpg combined (19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway), while the 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML250 BlueTEC gets 25 mpg combined (22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway).

However, both of those models are set to be replaced or updated for the 2016 model year.

Mercedes has already confirmed a 2016 GLE300d 4Matic model to supersede the ML250 BlueTEC, and Audi will likely offer a diesel version of its second-generation Q7 as well.

On the performance side, Land Rover claims the diesel Range Rover will do 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds, while the Range Rover Sport will get the job done in 7.1 seconds.

Both models are electronically limited to 130 mph.

Joe Eberhardt, President and CEO of Jaguar Land Rover North America, has said that virtually every model from Land Rover and its sister brand Jaguar will eventually offer a diesel powertrain in the U.S.

So far, the only other confirmed diesel model is the 2017 Jaguar XE sedan.

That compact luxury sedan will have a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four from the company's new Ingenium line when it arrives here next year.
