BMW has plans for a real-world field test of 450 MINI Coopers converted into electric cars. They began accepting applications from NY, NJ, and CA residents in December. A total of 1800 applications were received. BMW has stated the cars would be handed out throughout the first quarter to accepted applicants to begin their 1 year $850/month lease.

The process is taking longer than anticipated and now BMW believes it won't get cars out until April. The initial field of 1800 has been reduced to 1000 qualified recipients who are apparently being vetted by local dealerships.

In addition 10 vehicles will be given to the New York City to patrol for potholes and graffiti.
