Three weeks ago, Chevrolet unveiled two new launch markets for its 2011 Volt electric car and described some of the things dealers would need to do in order to be granted the privilege of selling GM's most advanced and most eagerly awaited car in decades. Now it appears that pretty much every Chevy dealer plans to do whatever it takes. General Motors said today that about 90 percent of dealers in the five launch regions--more than 600 from California, Texas, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and the Washington, D.C. area--have applied to sell the Volt, slightly more than it had...

GM Greens Its Auto ACs With Greenhouse-Gas-Friendly CoolantAmong the many substances emitted by autos back in the "good old days" were the refrigerant gases that would leak from older auto air conditioners. Freon, also known as R-12, was replaced starting in the early 1990s with R-134a, which did less damage to the ozone layer. Now concern has expanded to...

Forget It.Almost a year ago, General Motors launched a little marketing campaign connecting its 2011 Chevrolet Volt range-extended electric car to the figure "230 mpg." As we pointed out at the time, they were basing that projection on a proposed formula for fuel usage patterns that made a lot of assumptions...

General Motors announced today that it would offer an 8-year, 100,000-mile warranty on the battery pack, the charger, and the Voltec electric drive components of its upcoming 2011 Chevrolet Volt electric car. The announcement sets to rest potential worries that Volt owners might be stuck having to replace an expensive, high-voltage battery pack costing thousands of dollars just a few years down the road. The warranty matches the length of time that all components affecting the car's emissions must be free of owner maintenance, as per NHTSA regulations. It rises to 10 years or 150,000 miles in...

But now, with the imminent debut of the 2011 Fiat 500 late...

No, Electric Vehicles Won't Bring Down the U.S. Power GridLast week's heat wave prompted another eruption of that perennial question: Won't electric cars that recharge from grid power overload the nation's electricity system? Or put more bluntly: Will electric vehicles bring down the U.S. power grid? The answer, equally bluntly, is: No. They won't. (And...

Once more, a reader question prompts us to share the answer with our entire green car audience. In this case, it's about how first responders should approach accidents that involve vehicles with high-voltage battery packs, whether they're conventional hybrids (e.g. Toyota Prius) or upcoming electric cars like the 2011 Nissan Leaf or 2011 Chevrolet Volt. The first thing to know is that all modern electric-drive cars from major automakers have numerous interlocks and safety checks that instantly shut down the entire high-voltage electric system in the event of a crash or other emergency. Those...

IPO Or Not, Tesla Won't Survive As Independent, Analysts SayQuick, name the last automaker to go public before yesterday's Tesla Motors IPO. Stumped? It was Ford Motor Company. The year was 1956. When auto editors go on vacation, we rent cars too. Which is how a pair of very plain 2010 Toyota Corollas in South Africa taught us a few lessons about fuel economy, green value, and what other countries drive. The bottom line: U.S. buyers get a lot more car, for a lot less money, than elsewhere in the world. Toyota has built cars in South Africa for many years, avoiding punitive duties on imported cars that have kept local car manufacturing humming for decades. Toyota minivans are everywhere, used as taxis and minibuses all over Africa. We actually drove past Toyota's giant Prospecton...

But...
