Ah, ethanol, that most political of alternative fuels. Farmers love it, deficit hawks hate it, automakers want it for flex-fuel CAFE credits but nowhere else, and environmentalists only want it if it doesn't suck up food supplies, use too much water, or worsen the carbon balance. Yesterday, EPA officials came out swinging against a hale of criticism from carmakers and Senators over the impending arrival of E15 gasoline. What IS "science-based"? The director of the agency's office of transportation and air quality, Margo Oge, stressed the EPA's extensive research into any potential impacts of...

The Union of Concerned Scientists thinks hybrid-electric vehicles are a good thing, because they use less gasoline. But the savings in gas cost from that improved gas mileage varies enormously, and now the group has quantified the results. In their annual Hybrid Scorecard this year, the UCS ranks hybrids on how much they reduce fuel consumption over comparable non-hybrid models. It's an easy comparison for cars like the 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid or 2011 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, since they're simply hybrid adaptations of regular gasoline models. But it gets more confusing for so-called...

Launching the 2012 Fiat 500 minicar in the U.S. market was a gamble to begin with. But it's one that is paying off in some unexpected ways. Fiat's top North American executive, Laura Soave, told trade journal Ward's Auto that the Cabrio model with the roll-back cloth roof is proving far more popular than the 10 percent of sales that the company projected. Cabrios sold thus far have represented up to 20 percent of all Fiat 500 sales, which totaled 4,944 through June.
