Several news reports over the weekend noted that Tesla's contract to supply Toyota with electric powertrains for its RAV4 EV crossover would end next year. In the words of Tesla's latest quarterly report, cited by Bloomberg in a Saturday news story, “Toyota is expected to end the current RAV4 EV model this year." But a few other outlets have extrapolated this statement to indicate that the Toyota-Tesla deal is ending "early"--or that there was a possibility the RAV4 EV might continue beyond 2014--which contradicts what's known about the deal, and the RAV4 EV itself. The Dodge Dart compact sedan launched as a 2013 model hasn't sold as well as hoped. One thing that hurt its debut was the unfamiliar feel of its dual-clutch automatic gear gearbox, brought over from Europe to boost the fuel economy of versions fitted with the 160-horsepower turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Now, quietly, that transmission has been withdrawn from the Dart lineup, with one single exception: the Dart Aero ultra-efficiency model. It's hard to keep track of all the future battery technology candidates, but lithium-air battery technology is among the most widely-researched. Its biggest draw is the potential to store three times the energy in batteries the same size and weight of today's electric vehicles--providing huge increases in range.
