When GM Ventures announced it would invest an unspecified amount of money into startup hybrid truck-maker Bright Automotive, several of us noted that the prototype Bright Idea delivery van used an 2.0-liter engine and transmission from a Dodge Caliber. The announcement two weeks ago from General Motors' venture investing arm immediately prompted the question: Would Bright switch over to using GM powertrains as it developed the prototype into a production model? Not surprisingly, the answer is yes. Bright Automotive executive vice-president of corporate strategy Michael Brylawski confirmed...

Chrysler Kills Ram Two-Mode Hybrid Pickup Truck After AllThe big green car news from Chrysler yesterday was its announcement that it would build an electric version of the Fiat 500 mini-car for the U.S. market. Win one, lose one, perhaps. The company also dropped a death notice: It has ended development of its Ram Two-Mode Hybrid pickup truck, scheduled...

Four-Way Two-Mode Hybrid Project Ends, Lab Closes; Now What? The Two-Mode Hybrid project was hailed as a model of technical cooperation when it was announced five years ago. But now the partners are going their separate ways, and the complex hybrid system may end up solely as a General Motors technology. GM said in late 2004 it would partner with Daimler and...

That old capitalist tool, Forbes magazine, has issued a list of the 10 dirtiest cars sold in the U.S. At the very top, in first place for filth, is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. But it turns out there are some problems with their list. There's history behind this. A decade ago, the website for Forbes magazine practically pioneered the concept of Top-10 lists online. Remember "10 Best Colleges for Successful Topless Teenage Wealthy Cheerleader Executive Entrepreneurs"? Unfortunately, the cars Forbes flagged has some serious methodology errors (and one wrong photo), as more than 40...

Chrysler's Next Hybrid: 2011 Dodge Ram Hybrid Pickup Still On TrackWhile Chrysler was an original partner in development of the Two-Mode Hybrid system used in pickups and sport utilities by Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, as well as upcoming sport utilities from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, its hybrid history has not been happy. The company made fewer than 1,000 Dodge Durango...

2010 Dodge Caliber: Fewer Engines, 30 MPG Highway, Better InteriorThe Dodge Caliber hatchback has never been at the top of our compact-car list, in part because of its lousy gas mileage compared to the competition. Now, Chrysler has simplified its engine and drivetrain options to improve the gas mileage of the 2010 Dodge Caliber slightly, along with its platform...

Dodge Circuit EV: Review and Test DriveWriters over at Car and Driver magazine had the chance to get behind the wheel of the 2011 Dodge Circuit EV. Their review, though mostly positive, also points out a few drawbacks associated with converting an existing model to a full EV. The ride of the concept car took place at the Chrysler...

The Green, The Bad And The Ugly: Our Least Favorite Green CarsWe like green cars, and we define the term loosely. Sure, the 2010 Toyota Prius is green. But so's the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid pickup truck, because a full-size truck that gets 20 miles per gallon is much easier on the planet when you need a pickup truck. But try as we might, there are a...

Chrysler's on the skids right now, no doubt about it. June sales plummeted 42 percent, and some consider its takeover by--errr, sorry, partnership with--Italy's Fiat to be the blind leading the lame. But Fiat is far from the company it was 20 years ago, when it folded its tents and snuck out of the US, leaving handfuls of rusting, unreliable hatchbacks strewn across the landscape. Today's Fiat brings at least two green innovations to Chrysler: the fantastic Fiat 500 minicar, in four variations, and MultiAir, a new engine technology said to boost fuel economy at least 10 percent. Four models...

2010 Pontiac Vibe: The Last Pontiac Is The GreenestAs the world's battered automakers gear up for the 2010 model year, we say goodbye to a few outgoing models. Among them are the last Pontiacs, a brand General Motors will dispense with after 2010. The sole car offered to the public for the new model year will be the 2010 Pontiac Vibe, a five-door...

It appears as though Chrysler has finally made the decision as to which concept EV will be released first. Chrysler has previously displayed four different types of electric cars that make up their ENVI program. This includes the 2-seat Circuit Roadster as well as an extended-range Minivan, Jeep Patriot, and a stylish 200c sedan. Well they apparently have chosen the winner. And the winner is... the Dodge Circuit EV. The announcement is not yet official, but as part of their viability plan that they must submit to the government, the EV Roadster is listed under their product lineup for...
