Late last year, a small Chinese company achieved a milestone: It offered the world's first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle for sale. BYD Automotive, of Shenzhen, started selling its 2009 BYD F3DM (for "dual mode") compact sedan in December. So how's it been doing? Not too well. BYD said it hoped ultimately to sell 2000 F3DMs a month but it has sold less than 100 of the cars in the eight months it's been on sale, according to reports from Chinese auto-industry news service Gasgoo. Not ready for primetime While BYD beat General Motors to the punch, GM isn't too worried. Its 2011...

Tommy Kaira Mods Toyota PriusJapanese tuning firm, Tommy Kaira, has released a modified Toyota Prius that actually looks like it would be fun to drive. Unfortunately, it appears that the modifications are mostly visual, so if you were dreaming of a faster gas sipper, dream on. The pimped-out Prius certainly looks meaner, with...

HUMMER Drivers Say: I'm More Moral Than Effete Prius WimpsWe often say that many Toyota Prius hybrid owners and HUMMER drivers choose their cars for the same reason: They want to make a statement to other people about who they are. Now our pals at Wired have uncovered a fascinating (if small) sociological study that parses how HUMMER owners view their...

Volvo To Release Plug-in Diesel Hybrid in 2012Initial long term plans for Volvo have been scrapped in order to make way for a plug-in hybrid sooner than anticipated. Electric Supercharger Boosts Gasoline Engines To Diesel EfficiencyIn the accelerating quest for greater fuel efficiency, boosting engines--with turbos or superchargers--is one way to pull more power out of a given displacement. Traditionally, superchargers have been driven by chain or belt powered from an engine's crankshaft. Now, a British engineering firm has...

2010 Hyundai Elantra: It Isn’t Easy Being Green, But Blue Has PotentialHyundai Trys To Keep In the MPG Game

For most of the week last week, a 2010 Toyota Prius (third gen) served as my every-day driver. I drove it like I would have driven my own car. I didn't take it on any long road trips, because I didn't have any distant destinations. I didn't take it to a test track to see how many miles I could squeeze out of each gallon of gas. I just drove it around town, back and forth to school, work, the grocery store. My very first impression of the car could best be summed up as a yawn. I liked the Prius, but I didn't LIKE like the Prius. It seemed bland. (Read my first impression review here.) But...

Clean Diesels Cost More, But Will Americans Pay For Them? It's well known in the car industry that a diesel engine costs 10 to 20 percent more to build than a gasoline motor of equivalent output. That's because diesels have to be sturdier, and these days all US-bound diesels are fitted with turbochargers to boost their power. Now a European executive has...

Porsche Planning All-Electric Sports Car (Cautiously)The German automaker whose name is synonomous with "sports car" is planning an all-electric vehicle. Drag Race Video: 2010 Toyota Prius vs 2009 Toyota PriusWhich is faster, the 2010 Toyota Prius or its predecessor, the 2004-2009 Prius? On paper, the 2010 should win. Its engine is larger (1.8 liters vs 1.5 liters) and more powerful (134 total horsepower vs 104 hp). It's even got a lower coefficient of drag, the very respectable 0.25. This morning we...

Third-Gen Toyota Prius Ride & Drive, Day 2: Stealth ModeMy first impression of the third-gen Prius left me wondering what was cool about the vehicle. There aren't any growing leaves on the instrument panel, there's no sound that plays when you "boot up" the car (ala the Mac start-up sound). Yesterday, though, I had a mini-epiphany at the grocery store...

Third-Gen Toyota Prius Ride & Drive, Day 1: First ImpressionLast month, I drove the Lexus HS 250h for one week, and this week, I'm test driving the third-gen Toyota Prius. When I sat inside, my first thought was: boy, I wish they had given me the Prius first, then the Lexus. Not that the Prius isn't a great little car. It's just not a luxury car. I had...
