Teaser for Infiniti luxury EV due in 2013

The growing push towards smaller and more fuel efficient vehicles is leading the charge for changing consumer perceptions of what defines a luxury car--with size no longer the differentiator but rather technology, quality and design. We’ve already seen most of the major luxury brands release advanced hybrid models and in the next couple of years we will see them progress to full on electric vehicles.

Nissan and its Infiniti luxury division may have been late to the table when it comes to hybrids but neither brand will make the same mistake in regards to electric vehicles. Nissan is just months away from the launch of its new Leaf and in 2013 Infiniti will launch its own luxury electric vehicle, a teaser of which has been released today.

The sketch was shown by Infiniti’s senior vice president, Mr Andy Palmer, during a ceremony held to mark the opening of the Infiniti Center Piccadilly in London.

The only official details is that the vehicle will be a stylish compact with plenty of performance and seating capacity for five. Expect it to be based somewhat on the Nissan Leaf platform, although with a little more luxury and style. A more powerful electric motor and longer lasting batteries is almost a certainty as well.

Interestingly, 2013 is same year that BMW plans to launch its Megacity vehicle, and although the two vehicles look similar in their respective teasers they will be competing in different segments. The Infiniti model will be significantly larger than the Megacity and also more upmarket.
