In May, Italian supercar maker, Ferrari, entered the hybrid fray with a patent application for four-wheel drive systems utilizing electric motors. Today, Lamborghini has tossed its cap into the ring. According to Car Advice, in a recent interview with the German magazine, Automobilewoche, Lamborghini boss, Stephan Winkelmann, committed to bringing a hybrid to market by 2015.
Funny. That's when the hybrid Ferrari is expected to hit the streets.
The Lambo hybrid will use a small electric motor for low demand driving in slow, congested city traffic. When the open road calls the driver's name, however, either a 10 or 12 cylinder engine will respond. This is still Lamborghini we're talking about, after all.
Winkelmann expects to use the"lesser" Lamborghini Gallardo to test any new, more efficient powertrains, but a full electric vehicle along the lines of the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG is not planned.
Stay tuned.
