Nissan has made a bigger bet on electric cars than any other automaker, with plans to launch its 2012 Leaf electric car globally. But if electric cars are the future of green vehicles, hybrids are today's state of the art. And there, Nissan has lagged. It is developing its own hybrid system, but CEO Carlos Ghosn told Automotive News at the Tokyo Motor Show that Nissan will just add hybrid technology to existing models. No special bodies Translation: It does not plan to offer any "dedicated" hybrids, or vehicles that are sold solely as hybrids, without a plain gasoline equivalent (e.g. the...

As global demand remains high for the 50-MPG 2010 Toyota Prius, stocks of the car at U.S. dealers are down to a one-week supply, which is all but sold out. A normal supply is considered to equal 60 days' worth of sales. Sales of the 2010 Prius spiked in late July and August, due to a combination of natural demand for the all-new version and the effects of the "Cash-For-Clunkers" program that gave car buyers credits for replacing old, low-mileage cars with new, more fuel efficient models. But the shortages continued through September, and new Toyota president Akio Toyoda has initiated a...

Especially hybrid-electric vehicles from Toyota, Honda, Ford, and others. But now comes the hybrid...

Japanese tuning firm, Tommy Kaira, has released a modified Toyota Prius that actually looks like it would be fun to drive. Unfortunately, it appears that the modifications are mostly visual, so if you were dreaming of a faster gas sipper, dream on. The pimped-out Prius certainly looks meaner, with a front lip spoiler, larger rims and tires, and lower ride height. (Does anyone else have déjà vu?) Tommy Kaira's website also shows a "high performance exhaust system" for the Prius, but you'll need a Japanese translator to get much more information. The description of the product uses the words...

2010 Toyota Prius Ride & Drive ReviewFor most of the week last week, a 2010 Toyota Prius (third gen) served as my every-day driver. I drove it like I would have driven my own car. I didn't take it on any long road trips, because I didn't have any distant destinations. I didn't take it to a test track to see how many miles I could...
