Thus far, it's a been a quiet start to the third week of the Volkswagen diesel-emission cheating scandal. Eight years' worth of VW TDI models, both new and used, have been taken off sale at the company's North American dealerships. We surmise its engineers are working around the clock at their Wolfsburg headquarters to develop modifications to those cars that will let them comply with EPA limits in real-world use. Why Did Volkswagen Cheat On Diesel Emissions In Its TDI Cars?
The bad news for Volkswagen just keeps on coming. VW: 11 Million Diesels Had Cheating Software, $7.3 Billion Set Aside; Criminal Probe Reported

The announcement came out of the blue: "The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will host a media call at 12 noon EST today, Friday, September 18, to make an announcement regarding a major automaker." When it was all over, German carmakers Volkswagen and Audi had been ordered to recall half a million of its popular TDI four-cylinder diesel vehicles sold in the U.S. from 2009 to 2015. More startling, the EPA took the action because those TDI cars appeared to detect emission-testing cycles and significantly reduce their emissions under those circumstances. "Turbo" was the word to have on your car in the 1980s. Preferably in huge, bright script, completely out of correlation with the car's actual performance. Now, it's more often used as an indication of efficiency--take Ford's Ecoboost brand, for example. Audi has used them for many years on its gasoline and diesel models, and has now put its latest innovation--electric turbochargers--in a fully-working prototype vehicle. Based on the firm's RS5 performance coupe, Audi's turbocharged tech could legitimately wear bright 80s-style turbo stickers. And in fact, it does--in a sort of restrained...
