Lexus has been one of those companies that the automotive industry has been watching grow by leaps and bounds since the late ‘80s. The company’s biggest gamer changer back in the early days is arguably the Lexus LS400, a car that started out being a fringe competitor with the Mercedes S500 and BMW 7-Series only to become a fierce competitor in today’s market. Now with parent company, Toyota, having the most success in the hybrid market, Lexus seeks to move the luxury segment into the hybrid realm. After driving the newly announce (and currently pre-production) Lexus CT 200h...

We write a lot about future vehicles at Green Car Reports, but we also know that many of our readers seek practical information about which cars both save gasoline and lessen their impact on our...

Toyota, Subaru Cars To Get Lighter Using Toray Carbon FiberCarbon fiber is seen by many in the auto industry as one of the most effective ways of reducing vehicle weight and thus improving fuel economy and emissions levels, but the relative expense of the material means that it’s still reserved for only a handful of high-end production cars. BMW has...

Lexus CT 200h May Spawn Plug-In Hybrid VersionThe all-new 2011 Lexus CT 200h is scheduled to hit showrooms early next year complete with a 134 horsepower hybrid drivetrain and a very reasonable--for a luxury car--EPA combined fuel economy rating of 42 mpg. However, this is just the initial setup that Lexus engineers have planned for the CT...

2011 Lexus CT 200h Gets 42 MPG EPA-Rated Combined Fuel EconomyWhether it's the rather bland styling or the underwhelming stats, the 2011 Lexus CT 200h hasn't achieved much in creating buzz in the headlines. In fairness, hybrid power, low emissions and claims of high fuel efficiency don’t mean much without the all important EPA-rated fuel economy figures...

When I think of power modes, I really think of the ‘80s and ‘90s. I can remember the 300ZX having multiple suspension modes and the introduction of the new Maxima having Power, Comfort and a combination setting (basically changed the shift points and timing). The selectable “mode” for cars seems to have become very popular among the hybrid segment. At first there were only a couple of modes; generally an economy and power mode. The small luxury car segment felt that wasn’t enough, so on the 2011 Lexus CT 200h there are no less than four different modes to provide...

2011 Lexus CT 200h Shows Hybrids Can Be Sporty TooThe 2011 Honda CR-Z was meant to be the car that showed hybrids could be sporty as well as green, but sadly, its lowly 122 horsepower and dismal 0-60 times meant it was never going to be taken seriously in performance circles. Fortunately, there’s another hybrid vehicle on the horizon that may...

Only One Hybrid Car Pays Back Its Owners; Know Which One?One of the criticisms of hybrid cars has historically been that there's no payback, especially given the cheap gasoline prices in the U.S. The extra money you spend on a hybrid isn't returned in gas savings, say critics. Well, that may be true, especially when regular gasoline is averaging $2.77 a...

2011 Lexus CT 200h Hybrid Hatch 'Darker Side' Video LaunchesYou may recall that last month, we raised our eyebrows and scratched our head over the latest Lexus ad campaign, "The Darker Side of Green." The tagline, first unveiled at the 2010 New York Auto Show, turned out to be a teaser for the upcoming and unusual latest Lexus model, the 2011 CT 200h hybrid...

Land Rovers have long been the definition of gas-guzzling SUVs that environmentalists love to hate--that may all be about to change, however. With the development of a hybrid vehicle, the automaker stands a good chance of becoming one of the greenest companies around. Land Rover’s pledge to become environmentally friendly is starting to result in some interesting developments, with the automaker revealing this week its new Range_e hybrid concept vehicle based on the Range Rover Sport SUV. Building on previous developments like the ERAD (Electric Rear Axle Drive) diesel-hybrid LR2 from 2008...

2010 Lexus HS 250h Luxury Hybrid Not Selling As ExpectedLast summer, when we first drove the 2010 Lexus HS 250h luxury hybrid--and then did a full test drive--we were quite puzzled by it. Neither as fuel efficient as a hybrid nor as elegant and refined as other Lexus models, it seemed neither fish nor fowl. And in the end, while we appreciated its...

Green Car Roundup: Best & Worst of the 2010 New York Auto ShowWell, it's done. The public are streaming in, and the two media preview days of the 2010 New York Auto Show are over. It wasn't a hugely significant show, but clearly the apocalyptic meltdown that automakers were experiencing last year has lifted. Sales are starting to come back, slowly, and while...

NY Auto Show Puzzler: 'Darker Side of Green' = New Lexus Hybrid ??Hmmmmmm. First Sarah Silverman, now "The Darker Side of Green." What exactly is going on with Lexus these days? The ominous message is the tagline for an interactive web video called, logically enough, Lexus Dark Ride. It'll be released May 13. "Young, energetic, tech-savvy" It's meant to attract...

Lexus CT 200h Compact Hybrid Hatch: U.S. Sales In Early 2011A week before the New York Auto Show begins its media previews, Lexus has released more details on its CT 200h premium compact hybrid, which it says will go on sale in the U.S. in early 2011. Widespread reports (which we joined, unfortunately) had previously quoted a spokesman as saying Lexus had...

2011 Lexus CT 200h Makes U.S. Debut at New York Auto ShowWell, when we get it wrong, we really get it wrong. Just yesterday, when we reviewed the new green production cars from the Geneva Motor Show, we said the new 2011 Lexus CT 200h compact hatchback hybrid would be restricted to Europe. Not so. This morning, Lexus dropped a press release saying the...

No, sadly, we're not at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, underway this week in Switzerland. But we've been keeping close tabs on the introductions via our colleagues throughout the High Gear Media network. Here's our list of the green cars shown at Geneva that are headed for production. Most of them (except where noted) are headed for the U.S. market. We'll follow up with a similar roundup of the greenest concept cars from Geneva. 2012 Audi A8 Hybrid While its various e-tron electric concepts got more attention at Geneva, Audi's first production hybrid vehicle also debuted. The 2012 Audi A8...

2011 Lexus CT 200h Hybrid Hatch: U.S. Buyers Need Not ApplyMuch has been written about U.S. car buyers' aversion to hatchbacks, with many citing the relative sales of the Volkswagen Jetta four-door sedan over its five-door Golf counterpart. It appears Lexus has taken that attitude to heart. At next month's Geneva Motor Show, it will launch a new, dedicated...

New Hybrid Scorecard Slams Carmakers For Loading On LuxuryIt's long been known that hybrid buyers often choose them over luxury cars, and aren't buying them solely for the payback in gasoline savings. But a new Hybrid Scorecard, launched by the Union of Concerned Scientists, slams carmakers for inflating their prices by loading luxury into fuel-efficient...
