The word "propaganda" can mean many things to many people. Today, we're using it in the sense of "a form of communication aimed at influencing the attitude of a community," as Wikipedia neatly puts it. The busy public-relations team at General Motors is now putting out roughly a video every week on the special features of one vehicle or another in GM's lineup. Today's effort covers the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco, and how it achieves its EPA ratings of 28 mpg city, 42 mpg highway (for the six-speed manual version). We've covered several of those features before, including the active shutter...

Hyundai Steps Up Its MPG Reporting Dare To Other CarmakersAlthough EPA gas-mileage ratings may or may not be achievable in real-world driving conditions, they're a good relative benchmark. They're also a very public encouragement to carmakers to make more fuel-efficient cars. Hyundai, whose new 2011 Elantra compact model is rated at 40 mpg highway for all...

EPA Sticks To Its Guns, Still Considering Letter Grades For CarsDespite criticism from the auto industry, it looks like the EPA may be sticking to its guns and planning to launch new redesigned gas-mileage stickers for new cars that feature a prominent letter grade. With the first few Fiat 500 minicars now landing in Chrysler dealerships this month and next, the small car's fuel efficiency is clearly one of the main questions buyers will ask about. Now the EPA has released its final ratings for the car, though they're not yet on its FuelEconomy.org website. The agency says the 2012 Fiat 500 gets 30 mpg city, 38 mpg highway when it's fitted with the five-speed manual gearbox. That's a combined rating of 33 mpg. For the optional automatic, the ratings come in at 27 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, for a combined 30-mpg overall number. Those are respectable...

Volkswagen Says It Will Build 2-Seat, 260-MPG Plug-In HybridWhat's good gas mileage? 30 mpg? 40 mpg? The 50-mpg combined rating of the 2011 Toyota Prius, the most fuel-efficient car sold in the U.S. this year? Nah. How about 261 miles per gallon? Or, for the Europeans in the house, a mere 24 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. You heard right. The...

California, EPA, DoT Make Nice On Timing Of Higher MPG RulesThree government agencies agree to "coordinate" their actions and announce "a single timeframe" for proposing new rules. This signals "continued collaboration" among the trio. Yawn. But actually, this is a bigger deal than you might think. In the 10 months since President Barack Obama announced a...

The U.S. Congress began its 111th session this week, and the new Republican majority in the House clearly wants to change the regulatory tenor of the U.S. government. Automakers and their trade groups were among more than 150 entities who have already received a letter from Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA), the new chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Regulations vs jobs? According to The Detroit News, the letter asked for their thoughts on which proposed regulations or parts of the rulemaking process would "negatively impact the economy and jobs." The committee's goal...

Things We Read, And Like: 'Why We Need Energy Literacy'Many readers on this site are concerned with miles per gallon, or how much fuel their car uses. And while any site called Green Car Reports is bound to have an environmental tilt, most car buyers are far more concerned with saving money than saving the planet. Nonetheless, we're all about making...

U.S. Gasoline Usage Peaked In 2006, Will Plummet In FutureEven if you may not have heard of the Peak Oil theory, everyone knows that we'll continue to use more and more gasoline in years to come. Right? Well, errrrr, no. Maybe not. At least, that's the conclusion of both industry analysts and the oil companies themselves. The peak year for U.S. gasoline...

40-MPG Cars Are Better Than Ever; Too Bad They're Not SellingToday's small cars are better than they've ever been, even if few of them are among the EPA's all-time gas mileage champs. And spurred by tighter fuel-economy laws, 40 miles per gallon on the highway is becoming the new target for subcompact and even compact cars. There's just one little problem...

Why Are Few Of Today's Cars Among The Most Fuel-Efficient Ever?Every now and then, readers write to grumble about new cars and their gas mileage. The gist is usually something like this: You wrote that the new 2011 [Make & Model] gets 40 mpg highway? Well, big whoop-de-doo. I always got at least 45 mpg in my 1992 Geo Metro, and it was a whole lot cheaper...

Compact cars are pretty much a known quantity, and hence easy to visualize. Many are headed for 40-mpg highway ratings, and Hyundai recently threw down the gauntlet in saying it would start to report sales of 40-mpg vehicles--and challenged other makers to do the same. Imagine a compact car,and what do you see? Probably the newest or highest-volume vehicles in the class: Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, the new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze or Hyundai Elantra, or the upcoming 2012 Ford Focus. We're betting you don't see a 5,771-pound two-door car, more than 18 feet long, producing 453 horsepower from its...

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Delayed A Month, Misses Tax CreditThe U.S. launch of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has slipped a month, just enough to preclude buyers from taking advantage of a $1,300 Federal tax credit that expires December 31. According to Hyundai, the first cars will now reach dealers in January or perhaps later, rather than in early or mid...

2011 Ford Explorer At 25 MPG Highway, 20 MPG Combined, EPA SaysOne of the main reasons buyers steered away from the old Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle, according to Ford itself, was its fuel economy. Hyundai Drops The Gloves, Will Call Out Sales of 40-MPG CarsJust a month ago, we suggested that 40 miles per gallon is the new bragging threshold for subcompact and even compact cars. Now, Hyundai has dropped the gloves (or thrown down the gauntlet) with a clever marketing campaign to contrast it with other makers: It will start breaking out the sales of...

Will Hyundai Hammer Honda In Fight For Greenest Carmaker Title? For many years, Honda was routinely awarded the title of greenest carmaker in the U.S. market. But its most recent green cars have stumbled, and a dark-horse competitor is rising fast toward taking the coveted title, conferred every few years by the Union of Concerned Scientists. It's not Nissan...

2011 Chevrolet Volt Gets 93 MPGe EV Rating, 60 MPG CombinedThe shenanigans continue. Just this week the Nissan LEAF was rated at 99 mpg-equivalent by the EPA, raising the ire of our own John Voelcker--and justifiably so. Today, the Volt gets similar treatment and a similar rating, but only in EV mode. Add in the gas-only mode's 37 mpg rating and the...
