Fuel Economy
-
Hybrids have fans, diesels have fans, and while they produce their best fuel economy under different circumstances, each one tends to be a greener choice than a conventional gasoline car. But passenger cars with diesels are now just a tiny part of the U.S. market (less than 1 percent) compared to hybrids, which have stayed between 2 and 3 percent of sales for several years. Now Bosch, the German auto-parts maker, thinks that's about to change--and in a big way. Carnegie-Mellon study By 2015, the company projects, fully one in 10 new cars sold in the U.S. will have a diesel engine. The...

2012 Toyota Matrix: Small Car, Low Gas Mileage Too?Sometimes you have to ask, What were they thinking? A recent article on five small cars with the worst gas mileage named four for which gas mileage may not even cross the minds of their buyers. But it did remind us that the 2012 Toyota Matrix has pretty low fuel economy for a compact hatchback. In...

Gas Prices Falling Now, But Will They Stay Low?Any reader who's not driving a battery-electric car (and there are relatively few of you) may have noticed that gas prices have stopped rising, recently. They're even falling slightly--and, more important, the national average price is slightly cheaper this year ($3.84 per gallon) than it was at...

Higher Gas Prices Don't Change Buyers' New-Car Choices MuchFuel efficiency is making news headlines lately, with new-car sales achieving record high fuel-economy numbers in the U.S. (and in the U.K. as well). But a survey of car buyers last month by industry analyst AutoPacific seems to contradict the idea that high gas prices are leading buyers to change...

Small Four-Cylinder Engines Are Here To StayThere was a time when most car buyers looked on small capacity four-cylinder engines with distain. To them, unless an engine had 6-cylinders or more, it was over-stressed, underpowered and only fit for use in small European or Japanese economy cars. Nowadays, increases in gas prices, combined with...

It's not news that new, higher fuel-economy standards will raise the cost of future cars in real dollars. Now a new study, funded by the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), suggests that those increases will prevent up to 7 million buyers from affording new cars in 2025. That's out of a pool of perhaps 80 or 100 million potential buyers, mind you--not 7 million out of the 13 to 15 million people a year who actually buy vehicles. The study is based on debt-to-income ratios from a large consumer sample provided by U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics. Increases up to $3,000 by 2025? The...

2013 Ram 1500 Pickup Truck: Same Looks, Much Better Mileage (Video)The New York Auto Show, now open to the public, occupies two floors of the Javits Convention Center, and organizers this year were strict about relegating trucks to the basement. Chrysler was allowed only a single truck or crossover in its entire main-floor display. So it chose the 2013 Ram 1500...

Very Efficient Gas Engines More Important Than Electrics For 2010sElectric cars get a lot of press, and they'll increase in number--slowly--over the next decade. But more efficient gasoline engines are what will drive the increase in fuel efficiency for U.S. vehicles over the next decade. We've written many times about smaller, more efficient engines, and in a...

52 MPG At 70 MPH? No, Not In A Prius--In A Porsche PanameraSteady-speed highway cruising doesn't actually take that much energy compared to accelerating up to, say, 70 mph in the first place. The really hard part is getting consistently high gas mileage in all driving conditions--which is why the 50-mpg Toyota Prius hybrid is still a remarkable vehicle...

It still hasn't really registered in public awareness, but as we've said before, U.S. gasoline consumption has been falling since 2006. Now, it turns out that U.S. energy imports have been falling as well--from 60 percent in 2005 to just 45 percent last year. That can be attributed to two factors: more fuel-efficient cars, and more domestic energy production, including both oil and vastly increased natural-gas output. The recent economic downturn may have proved a blessing in disguise for boosting the efficiency of the overall U.S. vehicle fleet. U.S. drivers have delayed replacing their...

China Slows On Electric Cars To Focus On Fuel EfficiencySeveral years ago, the U.S. auto industry worried that Chinese carmakers would use inexpensive cars to gain a foothold here, just as Japanese and Korean makers had done. That hasn't happened, for many reasons--one being that making cars good enough to sell here is remarkably hard. More recently...

Smaller Engine Watch: VW 1.4 Turbo To Replace 2.5 Five In U.S.?We've been saying for a long time that one way carmakers will meet new, tougher gas-mileage rules is to make their engines smaller but more efficient. Ford's EcoBoost lineup of direct-injected, turbocharged engines is one example, from a 3.5-liter V-6 used in full-sized pickups all the way down to...

20 Years Of Gas Mileage: All Cars Improving, But Hybrids BestWith conventional gas engines incremental improvements of the range of 20% are possible over a 20 year span, but for really large gains alternative technology seems to be necessary.

Smaller, more efficient engines will be all the rage for the next 15 years, as automakers work to meet gas-mileage standards reaching past real-world averages of 40 miles per gallon. One of the most eagerly awaited is Ford's three-cylinder, 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September. It will replace non-turbo versions of its 1.6-liter four globally. That engine is coming to the U.S in the Fiesta and the Focus, but, according to Motor Trend, the Focus EcoBoost won't arrive before 2014. Best of all, Ford said it is targeting 50 to 55 mpg for the 2014 Focus...
