Many buyers of new Ford cars--both its 2013 C-Max and Fusion hybrids, and those fitted with its EcoBoost line of downsized, turbocharged engines--report real-world gas mileage much lower than the cars' EPA ratings. Ford is trying to counter almost a year's worth of media attention to these concerns by working to educate the public, and drivers in particular, about factors that affect fuel economy. The concern over Ford's fuel economy under real-world conditions arose soon after it launched its new 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid and Ford Fusion Hybrid models. Many media reports--including those on...

How We Became An All-Plug-In Electric Car HouseholdSince November 2006, our family has always owned at least one plug-in car and one powered by gasoline. The Honda Fit today is the oldest subcompact sold in the U.S., but there's an all-new one on the way. Now Honda has released the first official photos of the entirely redesigned Fit for the Japanese market, though only so far in the form of the Fit Hybrid model not sold in the U.S. The images show a more angular but otherwise recognizably all-new Honda Fit (also known in some markets as the Jazz). While Honda released few specific details, the latest Fit will likely retain its "Magic Seat" folding and removable rear seat--the feature that makes the current Fit the most flexible and capacious...

2014 Chevrolet Spark EV: First Drive ReportAspire, Sprint, Swift, and Esteem: They’re among the most ironically inappropriate car names. But in its new EV guise, the Chevy Spark has the perfect name, on many levels. This car certainly has more than a spark of personality; it's all-electric (forget about those spark plugs); and...

2013 MINI Paceman John Cooper Works: We Ask 'Why?'Every once in a while, we end up driving a car that leaves us utterly confused. The 2013 MINI Cooper Paceman John Cooper Works ALL4 we drove for a day last week is one such vehicle. It's striking, but far less functional than the MINI Countryman from which it's derived. The handling is decent, but...

Mazda launched its all-new 2014 Mazda 3 compact hatchback today at coordinated events in New York, Melbourne, Istanbul, St. Petersburg, and London. The new Mazda 3 lineup, which will include a four-door sedan version as well when it goes on sale this September, is the second model designed around the company's line of ultra-efficient SkyActiv four-cylinder engines. Without using any form of hybrid-electric drivetrain, Mazda's high-compression engines--here in 2.0- and 2.5-liter capacities--use carefully tuned exhaust systems and other refinements to deliver remarkably efficient driving. The...

Prototype Natural-Gas Vehicles Use Gasoline As Range ExtenderTo date, natural-gas vehicles have come with significant compromises. The high-pressure tanks that hold enough compressed natural gas to run 200 miles or more take up many cubic feet of space in the trunk, load bay, or pickup bed. But what if you could design a vehicle that had just enough natural...
