Audi's A8 L may be a big vehicle, but with one of Audi's famed TDI engines under the hood, you know it's unlikely to drink fuel like a big vehicle. That TDI engine is a 3.0-liter V-6, developing 240 horsepower and a chunky 406 pounds-feet of torque. Despite the performance on offer--60 mph will flash by in only 6.4 seconds--the A8 L TDI is still rated at 28 mpg combined by the EPA. That's higher than any of its other diesel or hybrid rivals--the 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and 2013 Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTec both do no more than 25 mpg combined. The aluminum-bodied A8 L TDI also manages 24 mpg...

Audi Plans 200 MPG-Plus High-Tech Small CarIn mainland Europe, where gas mileage is measured in liters used per 100 kilometers (l/100km), a 'three liter car' doesn't usually refer to engine capacity. Turbochargers always used to be about performance, but in recent years they've become very popular as a way of improving the efficiency of regular engines. Forced induction by turbocharging is still a good way of developing power, and many performance cars take just such a route. But using the same theory, you can build a smaller, more efficient engine, and turbocharge it to maintain the performance offered by its larger, gas-guzzling predecessor. Now, German automaker Audi has previewed a way in which turbocharging technology itself can be improved--electric turbocharging. Audi electric...

Earlier this week a report from the UK’s CAR suggested that Audi had nixed production plans for an electric city car based on its A2 concept. In addition to this, the report went on to claim that plans for a production version of the smaller A1 e-tron concept were also being putting on the shelf. The reason for the scaled-back plans was said to be a depressed European market and fears that a projected €40,000 (approximately $49,825) cost for the A2 model would make the car too expensive.
