Once upon a time, people who bought (or built) electric vehicles were often science-minded, forward-thinking, eco-conscious drivers who sometimes had a hippie past. Times have changed. Today, there are several motivations for buying a car that plugs into the electric grid to recharge its battery pack. Drawing loosely on research on the motivations of plug-in car buyers, done a few years ago at the University of California-Davis by a team headed by Tom Turrentine, rough categories of electric-car buyers include: Early Adopters: These are the folks who line up (or pay their teenaged kids to...

Sales of plug-in electric cars continued their slow climb in June. The 2011 Nissan Leaf racked up its best U.S. sales number ever while the 2011 Chevrolet Volt sales held steady, as the company had warned they would. Following a May total of 1,142 sales--the first time more than 1,000 Leafs had been sold--the June sales figure surged again, to 1,708. That brings total Nissan Leaf sales to 3,875 for the year (plus another 19 sold in December 2010). The 2011 Volt, on the other hand, logged 561 sales. That's more than its May total of 481, and it brings total U.S. Volt sales for the year to...

Why Haven't Hybrid Sales Been Higher, And Should They Be?Hybrid cars seem to bring out strong beliefs among car buyers, both pro and con. On the pro side, they get better gas mileage, offer some small degree of all-electric running, and let buyers display (to varying degrees) their green credentials. On the con side, they're usually pricier than...
