Two weeks ago, Toyota confirmed that it would offer more than one body style for its Prius hybrid-electric vehicle. Now, in Japan, the company has introduced a Toyota version of the car we know here as the 2010 Lexus HS250h. That car, the first "dedicated hybrid" from Lexus, was launched in Japan in July. The 2010 Toyota Sai goes on sale three weeks from now, on October 20. It is Toyota's second "dedicated hybrid"--a car with no gasoline-only counterpart--after the Prius. It will have a larger engine than the 1.8-liter unit in the Prius, presumably the same 2.4-liter four mated to the Hybrid...

World's First Plug-In Hybrid Sales? So Far, Not So GoodLate last year, a small Chinese company achieved a milestone: It offered the world's first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle for sale. BYD Automotive, of Shenzhen, started selling its 2009 BYD F3DM (for "dual mode") compact sedan in December. So how's it been doing? Not too well. BYD said it...

Tommy Kaira Mods Toyota PriusJapanese tuning firm, Tommy Kaira, has released a modified Toyota Prius that actually looks like it would be fun to drive. Unfortunately, it appears that the modifications are mostly visual, so if you were dreaming of a faster gas sipper, dream on. The pimped-out Prius certainly looks meaner, with...

HUMMER Drivers Say: I'm More Moral Than Effete Prius WimpsWe often say that many Toyota Prius hybrid owners and HUMMER drivers choose their cars for the same reason: They want to make a statement to other people about who they are. Now our pals at Wired have uncovered a fascinating (if small) sociological study that parses how HUMMER owners view their...

If you frequent this site, you've read all about electric vehicles and gas-electric hybrids. In those applications, electricity is stored in a battery, which powers an electric motor. That electric motor can either move the vehicle or assist the gas engine in hybrid configurations. One U.K. company is putting electricity to use in an unconventional way. Controlled Power Technologies (CPT) has developed what they call the Variable Torque Enhancement System (VTES). VTES is an electrically powered supercharger, which CPT says can improve performance of small internal combustion engines, while...

Well, Why NOT a (750-Horsepower) Chevrolet Corvette Hybrid? The 2010 Chevrolet Corvette goes like stink. Its 430-horsepower, 6.2-liter V8 is the epitome of all-American performance. And that's just the base car. The supercar contender ZR1 model heads straight into the stratosphere. The Vette is an icon, and GM messes with it at its peril. So a throwaway...

Porsche Planning All-Electric Sports Car (Cautiously)The German automaker whose name is synonomous with "sports car" is planning an all-electric vehicle. Toyota Vice President Says Electric Cars Are Too Expensive"Electric vehicles of today are less costly than in 1990s, but if you compare them with the other vehicles out there they are still too expensive." Covering all the green-car bases at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled not only the E-Up electric city car concept but also the L1, a radical 170-mpg tandem two-seat diesel hybrid streamliner it says it will sell by 2013. The L1 name refers to the European concept of a "1-Liter" car, meaning one so efficient it uses no more than 1.0 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. If you're not particularly metric, that translates to 235 miles per gallon. VW didn't quite make its mark; the L1 actually uses 1.38 L/100 km, meaning its gas mileage is "only" 170 miles per gallon. To keep weight...

Drag Race Video: 2010 Toyota Prius vs 2009 Toyota PriusWhich is faster, the 2010 Toyota Prius or its predecessor, the 2004-2009 Prius? On paper, the 2010 should win. Its engine is larger (1.8 liters vs 1.5 liters) and more powerful (134 total horsepower vs 104 hp). It's even got a lower coefficient of drag, the very respectable 0.25. This morning we...

This is the face of the Lexus LF-Ch hybrid concept and it will probably come in colors other than baby poop metallic. This premium compact designed to compete with the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series will have its public debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept is a dramatic departure from any current Lexus model, although the hood lines bear some resemblance to the IS. If the new vehicle hits the streets, it will face some speedy and fuel efficient competition. The aforementioned Audi achieves a combined 25 mpg rating with a 2.0 liter turbocharged "Fuel Stratified Injection" power...

The answer depends in part on your...
