Many drivers have fond memories of Datsun cars from the 1970s and 80s, and their modern-day values are testament to the brand's endearing simplicity and fun. Whether the newest Datsun--seen here in official sketches and due to be revealed in India on July 15th--will continue those traits is anyone's guess, but unfortunately, Datsun may not be U.S.-bound this time around. Nissan revealed it would revive the Datsun brand in March last year, with an eye on producing low-cost vehicles for developing markets. Think simple, fuss-free transport in markets where such a thing normally means a lowest...

If College Kids Can Get 1000 MPG, Why Can't You?Many green car enthusiasts love a hypermiling challenge. They'll eagerly drive in the slow lane, forego air-conditioning, and take different routes to and from work to make the most of downhill traffic, just to boost fuel economy by a couple of miles per gallon. But as hard as those folks try...

2014 Pickup Truck Gas Mileage: Ford Vs Chevy Vs Ram, Who's Best? The U.S. will save a lot more gasoline by improving the fuel efficiency of gas-guzzling high-volume pickup trucks than it will swapping out Toyota Corollas for Prius hybrids. That's mathematical fact. Now, finally, the makers of the three most popular pickup truck lines sold in the U.S. are...

Politics in New York City are a tough, bruising game. Pit a billionaire Mayor with a desire to make the city work better and cut carbon emissions against the entrenched interests of taxi owners, and you get an ongoing battle. The latest skirmish is a concession by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission over the sticky issue of whether future cabs should be hybrids. On Thursday, the TLC said taxi medallion owners can choose to buy hybrid cabs instead of the Nissan "Taxi of Tomorrow". It complies with a May court ruling that required taxi operators to be given the option of continuing to use...

How Often Can Stop-Start Systems Restart An Engine? More Than 1 Million TimesVisit any European city, and you'll be struck by an unfamiliar sound: That of engines, previously silent, re-starting on every green light. But if you have little choice but to sit in that traffic on your way to work, a new study shows you'd be best off with a hybrid vehicle. You probably didn't need a study to tell...

New Gas Mileage Rules Will Reshape What Americans Drive: Engines And TransmissionsSmaller, more efficient engines better matched to more complex transmissions will have some of the biggest effects in making tomorrow's cars more fuel-efficient. The 2025 corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) level of 54.5 mpg translates to about 42 mpg on the EPA window sticker. And while Toyota...

New Gas Mileage Rules Will Reshape What Americans Drive: Aerodynamics And WeightNo, we won't all be driving golf carts. In fact, as cars change over the next 12 years to meet much tougher fuel-economy rules, automakers will likely do their best to keep the changes invisible. Your next vehicles will deliver better gas mileage than ever before, no matter how large or small they...

Real-World Gas Mileage Moving Away From EPA Ratings: ReportYour mileage may vary--but these days, it appears, your mileage may vary more than it used to. According to a new report, the gap between rated fuel efficiency and the real-world gas mileage achieved by actual drivers is increasing. In 2001, it notes, the average difference between rated gas...

Ford's updated Fiesta SFE is offering even better fuel efficiency for the 2014 model year. The Fiesta uses a 1.6-liter gasoline engine, developing around 120 horsepower. It's a fun little car to drive, but the main focus here is economy. With EPA-rated mileage figures of 30 mpg city, 41 highway and 34 combined, it uses less fuel than any other subcompact--save for Toyota's hybrid Prius C, of course. The smallest Prius comfortably beats the Fiesta SFE on every measure--and a full 23 mpg in the city--albeit for extra cost. A closer comparison might be Nissan's 2013 Versa, which loses 1 mpg to...

Kei Cars: Japan's Tiny (But Often High-Tech) MinicarsYou don't need us to tell you that the Japanese car market is about as far-removed from the U.S. market as it's possible to get. Where big trucks still dominate in North America, vehicles that almost fit in the average truck's pickup bed make up almost half of all Japanese car sales. Those cars are...

You want a four-seat car with the highest EPA combined gas-mileage rating you can get--but you've decided you don't want a hybrid. For 2014, two new competitors are joining the fray--and they seem likely to offer considerably better fuel efficiency than today's best-of-the-pack. This year, your winning choice is the 2013 Nissan Versa L subcompact sedan, rated at a combined 35 mpg when fitted with the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). (The 2014 Nissan Versa Note hatchback is also rated at 35 mpg with the same powertrain, by the way.) Coming for the...
