The 2010 Fisker Karma will be the world's first production series hybrid, or extended-range electric vehicle, when it comes off the line late this year. Customer deliveries will start next May. Just prior to the Karma's German debut at next week's Frankfurt Auto Show, the company released emissions figures for the car. It will get, Fisker says, 67 miles per gallon (3.5 liters/100 kilometers) and its CO2 emissions will be only 83 grams per 100 km. Those are clearly impressive numbers for a large, $87,000 luxury sedan that accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds, with a top speed...

Fast Forward: Mercedes-Benz Updates 1992 DieselNow, this is cool. You've likely seen the Mercedes-Benz diesels of the 1980s and 1990s chugging along somewhere or other. But how much better are today's clean diesels than the solid old oil-burners of 20 years ago that still power those sturdy survivors? Back to the future: 1992 to 2009...

VIDEO: Audi's Electrifying New Microsite Revives R8 EV RumorsIn late May, we reported on rumors that an electric version of Audi's R8 supercar would be at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Nary a day later, Edmunds Inside Line crushed our hopesand put the rumors to rest, citing an Audi representative who refuted the blogosphere's claims. We're not ready to say "we...

Honestly, this post has very little to do with new cars for sale today. Instead, think of it another piece of green propaganda encouraging you to consider buying an emissions-free electric car when they start to enter the market in 2011 or thereabouts. The experimental alt-rock band They Might Be Giants has been around for more than 25 years now, and after winning a couple of Grammies, they've lately gotten into the movie soundtrack business. Their new Disney album, Here Comes Science, includes our new favorite song of the week, "Electric Car". You can watch the video below, which kinda...

2010 Dodge Caliber: Fewer Engines, 30 MPG Highway, Better InteriorThe Dodge Caliber hatchback has never been at the top of our compact-car list, in part because of its lousy gas mileage compared to the competition. Now, Chrysler has simplified its engine and drivetrain options to improve the gas mileage of the 2010 Dodge Caliber slightly, along with its platform...

Ford Super Duty Pickups To Offer Clever PowerStroke Turbodiesel V8Ford's been around a long time; it just celebrated the 100th birthday of its Model T. Much of its green news these days focuses on its upcoming 2011 Ford Fiesta subcompact, the well-received new 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid sedan, and its Escape Hybrid sport utility. But Ford had never designed and...

Electric-Car Maker Think Emerges From Bankruptcy, Plans US SalesWe've always had a soft spot for Think, the Norwegian electric-car company. From its start in 1991, it set out to build not just battery-powered vehicles, but electric cars that could be used on highways and pass all safety tests in any country. That sets it apart from the scores of EV companies...

Lexus Goes Hybrid-Only...in BritainWell, here's a surprise. It's no news that Lexus has found it slow going breaking into the luxury market in Europe, which is dominated by Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Jaguar. By contrast, Lexus has become the highest-selling US luxury brand since its 1989 launch, largely on the strength of its midsize...

On Wednesday, August 26, 1959, a new type of small car was unveiled in Austin and Morris dealerships across Britain. Many buyers didn't know quite what to make of the Morris Mini-Minor and Austin 7even (yep, that's what they called it--for a very short while). It had seats for four, it was just 10 feet long bumper to bumper, and the engine sat sideways, driving the front wheels. A coupe at age 50 Fifty years to the day later, much of the world knows the iconic Mini brand, now owned by Germany's BMW and most often sold in its high-performance rollerskate persona, the 2010 Mini Cooper. To...

Orders for Lexus HS 250h 20 Times Higher Than Toyota ExpectedPerhaps it's the gas mileage rating of 35 mpg city, 34 mpg highway. Perhaps it's the tax breaks offered in Japan for hybrid vehicles, or perhaps it's because it's Lexus' only dedicated hybrid model, but whatever the cause is, Lexus surely isn't complaining that pre-orders for the Lexus HS 250h...

2010 Toyota Prius Price-Gouging Pops UpWe've just read some nice investigative reporting by DailyTech's Jason Mick on a well-known but infuriating phenomenon: auto dealer price gouging, in this case on the sought-after 2010 Toyota Prius. We're far from the only outlet to note that the Cash-For-Clunkers plan boosted sales of the 2010...

Are Carmaker Sites Using Hybrids (Ineptly) As Spam Bait?We get a lot of spam. Everyone gets a lot of spam. In fact, Symantec says nine of every 10 e-mail messages are spam. But we're scratching our head over a recent spam that uses the topic of hybrid cars, particularly clumsily, to link (via Dubai, no less) to real carmakers' hybrid, diesel, and...

2010 MazdaSpeed3: Sporty Green Sizzle, Zoom-Zoom StyleOnce in awhile, High Gear Media editors get lucky. Last Thursday, our own Bengt Halvorson managed to snag a drive in the 2010 Mazda MazdaSpeed3 before any other reporter. Which means those sites that just posted their reviews yesterday (they know who they are ...) were just a tad behind the curve...

2010 Volkswagen Golf TDI Stickers Under $22K, Over 40 MPG HighwayAs we regularly note, Volkswagen's line of TDI diesels has lots of fans out there. Now, the company has priced the eagerly awaited 2010 Volkswagen Golf TDI, with the cheapest version coming it at $21,990, just a hair less than $22K. While it's not the diesel-for-under-$20K that diesel fans had...

Just two weeks ago, we reported that GM's first plug-in hybrid vehicle--originally meant to be a Saturn Vue before GM decided to sell Saturn to Pennske--would become a Buick crossover. My, how quickly things change in the new Internet world. As GM said Wednesday on its Fastlane blog, "not all the feedback was positive." Twitter: #Vuick #Fail! In fact, the idea of quickly renaming the former Saturn Vue as a Buick--by changing the grille and some trim--"received consistent feedback from large parts of all the audiences that it didn’t fit the premium characteristics that customers have come...

Buying Tip: Is 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid Only a Fair-Weather Friend?A few weeks ago, we got a note from reader Laila Folk asking about air conditioning in hybrid cars, specifically the 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid. She wrote: Can you get an answer from Ford Corporation regarding the inclusion of an electric motor driven air compressor for the A/C unit in the 2010...

Peugeot To Show First Production Diesel Hybrid, For Europe OnlyWe're pretty focused on the US car market here at GreenCarReports.com, so we don't write about cars we won't be able to buy all that often. Today, we're making an exception for a particularly significant technology advance. Next month, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, French automaker Peugeot will...
