As part of the same program that will develop an electric Volkswagen Golf, Audi is planning an A3 electric. The program, called VW TwinDrive, has not released any firm release or sale dates, but Audi is hinting at fleet trial target of 2012.

AutocarUK is reporting that the hybrid A3 will run on a four-cylinder diesel engine with a total of three 30kW electric motors to drive the four wheels (one for the two front wheels, and one for each of the two rear wheels). The motors will be powered by a trunk-mounted lithium-ion battery pack, and with energy gathered in regenerative braking.

Attention, Audi: I’m already looking forward to a test drive.
