Americans Are Driving Less, And Have Been Since 2005There's a far more effective way of reducing pollution and dependency on oil than buying more efficient cars or going electric: Driving less. It's not an option available to everyone of course, but it certainly helps reduce fuel use. And it's something Americans have been doing in a steady trend...

Fuel Economy Keeps Rising: 24.6 MPG In MarchIf you're used to driving around in a Prius then average miles per gallon of 24.6 will sound a little poor in comparison. If you publish thousands of stories a year, sometimes you get asked to speak to groups of people about your topic. Which is how we came to talk about electric cars and try to allay some popular myths to a group of New York City activists called the Sane Energy Project. In the person of cheerful co-founder Clare Donohue, Sane invited us to educate its members--who mostly don't own cars, many of whom don't drive at all--about plug-in electric cars and how they tie into U.S. energy policy and politics. Green Car Reports gave a sort of high-level "Electric Cars 101," looking at how plug-ins will...

Sometimes there comes an idea so audacious, so inspired, so downright jaw-dropping that it's worth covering even if it doesn't directly involve cars. You may know Earth Day is coming up on Monday, April 22. Localities and groups all over the country celebrate it. So, how has the Utah Department of Natural Resources chosen, for two years in a row, to honor the day on which we "inform and energize populations so they will act to secure a healthy future for themselves and their children"? By inviting elementary schools in Utah and their students to create posters (exactly 11 x 17 inches, please)...

For those readers living in one of America's big cities, concrete jungles strewn across the North American landscape, it's easy to forget that hundreds of thousands of acres are set aside in some states as National Parks. The National Park Service and U.S. Department of Energy are working together to keep them that way--launching an initiative to use alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies in U.S. National Parks. The aim is to reduce air pollution, greenhouse gases and...
