A lot of media discussion these days seems to focus overly on the low sales of plug-in electric cars (this piece from Friday, for instance). That despite the fact that plug-ins are selling faster than hybrid vehicles did at the same phase of their launch. But automotive history may provide another piece of context for looking at how plug-ins are doing these days. Very first Prius It's the inevitable comparison between the 2013 Nissan Leaf and the 2001 Toyota Prius, that maker's very first hybrid model sold in the U.S. The Prius was actually launched in 1997, but it was sold only in Japan...

Since November 2006, our family has always owned at least one plug-in car and one powered by gasoline. For almost two years, our fleet has been a Nissan Leaf electric hatchback, and a used 2008 Toyota Prius. After two years and nearly 42,000 miles of driving the Leaf, however, our once high-tech Prius had begun to feel like little more than a gas-guzzler. It also became the subject of a good-natured daily fight over who would would have to drive it, versus who would get to enjoy the comfort and performance of the all-electric Leaf. With a few high repair bills looming on the horizon for our...

Fast Chargers Proliferate For Nissan Leafs, New Etiquette Issue ArisesYou'll often see an "80 percent" metric used when discussing electric car charging at a fast charger. There's a very good reason for this: While that first 80 percent may fly by in only a quarter to half hour, the last 20 percent takes one heck of a lot longer. It's that last 20 percent that is now...

Nismo Offers To 'Chip' Your Leaf Electric Car For Better PerformanceNice vehicle though the 2013 Nissan Leaf is, it's just a little... tame, for some people. Those people may be intrigued to know that in Japan at least, there's an option to give it a little more performance. We've covered the Nissan Leaf tuned by NISMO (for NISsan MOtorsport) previously, but the...

To allay fears about loss of capacity in its Leaf electric-car battery packs, Nissan announced today that it would offer what amounts to a battery leasing program after the pack goes out of warranty. The cost of ensuring minimum capacity will be $100 a month. The company now warranties the Leaf pack to maintain at least 70 percent of its capacity (or 9 of the 12 bars on the display) over the car's first five years or 60,000 miles. But for owners who want assurance that they will continue to have at least that level of capacity, Nissan is introducing the new program. The program will launch...

Nissan Leaf Electric Car Boosts Nissan's Brand Image, ReputationElectric vehicles are still considered a risky strategy in the business world, with relatively low sales numbers not enough to convince skeptics of their business case. The car, owned and driven by Steve Marsh of Washington state, was one of the highest-mileage Leafs we'd heard of...

After our quick drive of a 2013 Nissan Leaf before the New York Auto Show in late March, we were finally able to spend some extended time with the updated electric car outside Nashville. Our initial impressions remain the same: The Leaf is a perfectly normal, competent compact five-door hatchback that happens to run on a battery-electric powertrain. Its limited range of 75 miles aside--that's 15 percent higher than comparable ratings from earlier years, but the calculations are complex--the Leaf will do anything that any other compact hatchback will. 75 miles (in nice weather) We covered two...
