Electric Cars

  • Peugeot Prologue

French automaker PSA Peugeot Citroen has been planning to introduce a plug-in diesel electric hybrid car in 2011. The advanced electric powertrain is intended to be placed in the 3008 crossover vehicle. The company apparently isn't exuberant about the public's appetite for this vehicle indicating that they would only expect to sell them in the tens of thousands of units. However, the high cost of lithium ion batteries will affect the future project and may, according to Ladimir Prince, manager of PSA's hybrid innovations unit, "be delayed by a year or two." • Regenerative Shock Absorber

If you're dissatisfied with your hybrid's fuel economy, Tufts University has your back. Two engineering professors there have developed shock absorbers that use electromagnetic generators to convert intermittent linear motion to electrical power. In non-nerd-speak this means that energy from your tires moving up and down over the road's surface is changed into electricity which can be used to charge your hybrid's battery. The typical shock absorber changes the excess energy into heat which is absorbed by shock oil (i.e. it's wasted). The regenerative shock absorbers could theoretically be...
