One of the most novel electric vehicles we've seen in recent years is the Hiriko. The Hiriko is designed for inner city car sharing schemes, initially in Europe but also touted for some U.S. cities. And it has a party piece: The Smart-sized electric vehicle can effectively fold in half to fit tiny parking spaces. In previous years this might have sounded like vaporware, but L'Expansion reports (via Auto123) that the Hiriko is set to go into production in the Spring, following a reveal at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Developed between a group of Basque entrepreneurs and experts at the...

So who buys a Nissan Leaf? Not, as you may be unsurprised to learn, the sort of person who doesn't really care what they buy, says one Nissan dealer. As Nashville Business Journal reports, Leaf customers are already pretty sure they want a Leaf when they walk onto the lot. "It's typically a very educated customer who's doing the Leaf," explains Broderick Alley of Downtown Nashville Nissan, "they come in hoping it fits their needs." Leaf customers often walk into the dealership knowing they want a Leaf, but speak to the dealer to ensure it's suitable for the mileage they drive, that they like...

Nissan Celebrates Leaf Electric Car's Second BirthdayHappy birthday, Nissan Leaf! Believe it or not, Nissan's electric car is now celebrating its second anniversary. Sharp-eyed Tesla Model S buffs may be wondering why the mid-range 60-kWh car, which costs $10,000 less, is rated more efficient than the top-of-the-line 85-kWh model. The EPA said last week that the 60-kWh Model S has a range of 208 miles, and its efficiency rating is 95 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent). That's about 7 percent better than the 89 MPGe rating for the 85-kWh version--which has a rated range of 265 miles. Measured from a different angle, the EPA says the 60-kWh car uses 35 kWh of electricity to go 100 miles. The equivalent number for the longer range version is 38 kWh, meaning...

Indianapolis Works Toward Totally Electrified City FleetThere's a lot of discussion about hybrids and plug-in electric cars being sold to private buyers. However you choose to enjoy herbal products, the last place you'd expect to find them is in your electric car battery. Thanks to a new discovery though, the Madder plant, also known as Rubia, could prove useful as a natural cathode in batteries. Madder has long been used as a source of purpurin, an organic dye used since ancient times to color fabrics. As ScienceBlog reports, scientists at Rice University and the City College of New York have discovered that purpurin also makes a good natural cathode for lithium ion batteries. Unlike many other future battery technologies, this one isn't...
