The Detroit Electric SP:01 you see above was teased last month, but readers will note its similarity to the British Lotus Elise sports car--albeit one with electric power. This is not, it has to be said, an original idea. The Tesla Roadster of a few years past also used a Lotus Elise chassis, albeit with carbon-fiber bodywork and a unique redesign. The PG Elektrus was similar. As was the Nemesis. And several others besides. There's a good reason for it of course--the Elise's aluminum chassis provides electric automakers with a light, strong, adaptable platform. But what separates Detroit...

Oh, Tesla: Your 'Lease' Is Smart, But That Calculator Wasn'tWell, that didn't take long. Yesterday, just before 5 pm Eastern time, Tesla Motors [NSDQ:TSLA] released details of its new "lease-like" financing product. The general consensus in the media (we read a lot of Tesla coverage here, folks) has been that it's smart for Tesla to offer financing for its...

And now we know: Tesla's Big Mystery Story, teased via more than one tweet from CEO Elon Musk, is this: You will soon be able to "lease" a brand-new 2013 Tesla Model S. That's a good thing (though not nearly as much fun as some of the ideas proposed under the Twitter hashtag #TeslaPredictions). But we digress. Tesla Motors [NSDQ:TSLA] has partnered with two banks, Wells Fargo and US Bank, to create a "new kind of financing product" that combines, the company claims, "the surety and comfort" of actually owning a car with the traditional advantages of a lease. On a conference call held today...

Nissan Leaf's Great-Grandfather: The Tama EVYou might think high gasoline prices are a problem now, but at least it's relatively easy to get hold of. The same couldn't be said in Japan after the end of World War II, when the country's gasoline supplies were limited under Allied occupation. Transport was still vital, which led Nissan and...

Could Carmakers Sell More Electric Cars With Green Energy Included? In our experience, owners of electric vehicles are also rather keen on green energy. Where appropriate, many fit solar panels to supply some of their energy needs, and others use green energy tariffs and similar. As it turns out, marrying the two is a good way of enticing people into electric...

The ranks of dedicated electric cars--those designed from scratch as plug-in vehicles--are thin. Come December, a fourth entry, the 2014 BMW i3, will join the three currently on the market (the Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt, and Tesla Model S). BMW officials confirmed last Thursday that the first i3 models would go on sale in the U.S. very late this year. The initial batch of i3 models will all be fitted with the ReX range-extending two-cylinder engine, an option on the battery-electric BMW. BMW executives also confirmed that the i3 will not be as powerful when operating on its ReX...
