To allay fears about loss of capacity in its Leaf electric-car battery packs, Nissan announced today that it would offer what amounts to a battery leasing program after the pack goes out of warranty. The cost of ensuring minimum capacity will be $100 a month. The company now warranties the Leaf pack to maintain at least 70 percent of its capacity (or 9 of the 12 bars on the display) over the car's first five years or 60,000 miles. Tesla Loses Legal Battles To Texas, North Carolina DealersWin some, lose some. Today, California is generally accepted as the hub for electric car activity. Not only are high-profile electric car companies like Tesla Motors [NSDQ:TSLA] based there, but healthy incentives and clement weather make owning an electric car in the Golden State about as easy as anywhere else in the world. It hasn't always been that way though. A hundred years ago, Chicago, Washington, DC and Detroit were similar electric hubs--and Washington had more electric cars in 1913 than it has today. The Electric Vehicle Association of Greater Washington, DC (EVADC) unearthed a November 1913 article in...

Just how popular are hybrid cars? 40 percent more in 2012 than in 2011, according to the latest study from Experian Automotive. In fact, a little more than that--40.9 percent to be precise, with overall market share increasing from 2.2 percent to 3.1 percent in a single year. It's a stark indication of the hybrid car's relentless transformation from eco-themed curiosity to mainstream car choice. It also reflects just how well the average hybrid assimilates into an owner's life, requiring no day-to-day compromise while it goes about saving them money on gas. Toyota has been particularly adept...
