Even the most ardent hybrid car fan would struggle to say they're the sort of vehicle to get your pulse racing. Today, Toyota released an official video of its upcoming plug-in hybrid concept, the NS4.

Last month, Toyota (via Motor Authority) previewed the NS4 concept. Due at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in next week, could it be about to change the hybrid's staid image?

From the single teaser image we have so far, there's every chance it could. Following in the footsteps of the recent Toyota GT-86 sports car, the headlamp in the image seems to be much more aggressive, hinting that future Toyota hybrids will share the 86's design direction.

Beyond the teaser image there are few details about the car, including whether it's set to be a sedan, coupe, or a hatchback to join the Prius and Prius C compact.

What we can expect is for the NS4 to share some components with the 60 mpg plug-in Prius - Green Car Reports' best car to buy 2012. Plug-in hybrids look like being a large part of Toyota's future, so we wouldn't be surprised to see cars like the NS4 concept joining the Prius in Toyota's range.

We'll bring you further news of the NS4 as and when we get it. Until then, why not check out our dedicated 2012 Detroit Auto Show page?
