Tesla Model S

  • 2012 Tesla Model S beta vehicle, Fremont, CA, October 2011

Well, this one's not a big shock: Tesla Motors announced yesterday that its 2012 Model S electric sport sedan would use Panasonic lithium-ion cells in its battery pack. Panasonic is one of several companies that have invested in Tesla, and the two companies had announced in 2009 that they would work together to develop "next-generation cells." Over the next four years, the Japanese company will supply enough commodity lithium-ion cells to allow Tesla to build more than 80,000 vehicles, which ties neatly to the announced goal of building up to 20,000 of the Model S each year. That total also...

  • Tesla Store in LA

Drop by your local Apple retail store, and you’re bound to see it humming with visitors. But while some are there to hand over their hard-earned cash for a new computer or mobile device many more are there to soak up the apple store experience. Most are there just to window shop, dreaming of the day when they too become a member of the Apple clan. And it turns out that Tesla is experiencing that same phenomenon in its stores as Apple, with one store reporting as many as 12,000 visitors a week. Of those 12,000 visitors, most are nothing more than ‘tire kickers’ - people who...

The recent opening of a new Tesla store in Milan provided a forum for current Roadster owners to ask Elon Musk exactly what's going on with the Tesla Model S. The answers? Pretty much everything is going according to plan. According to Tesla: Testing of the Alpha models is ramping up to full speed after starting in December 2010. Beta models (production-intent versions of the Model S) should begin final assembly sometime this year for final tests before the first deliveries arrive in North America in mid-2012. • 2012 Tesla Model S body-in-white

If Tesla Motors had a single message to convey at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, it was this: We're a real car company. Rather than show a completed prototype of its Model S all-electric luxury sports sedan, scheduled to launch by the end of 2012, the company showed the car's shell. That allowed other carmakers to look it over, see that it wasn't based on any other company's platform or structure, and pass their own judgment on the structural engineering, suspension design, and of course the slimline battery pack that forms the floorpan. And visit they did, including no less a luminary than...
