US has world's second highest electric-car population
The race is on to see which countries can sell the most electric cars in an effort to reduce global warming. As with many things counted in raw numbers, China is far ahead, with 1.28 million electric cars on the road. As with most things Chinese, however, the population numbers—of people or...

Tesla Model 3 owns the EV market, outsells all other plug-ins combined in the fourth quarter race
Last year, Tesla changed the game for plug-in and electric-car sales as it ramped up production of its relatively affordable Model 3 to almost 5,000 cars a week. As we noted early this month, the Model 3 by itself outsold most whole luxury brands and some entire mainstream makes. (Are you...

Was 2018 the peak for internal-combustion car sales?
Electric-car sales are growing. Total car sales around the world are shrinking. Put the two together, and the conclusion from many analysts is that sales of cars powered by internal combustion engines around the world have already peaked. From 2019 onward, they're likely to do nothing but shrink...

Nothing comes close to Tesla: 2018 Q3 plug-in sales
Even with solid increases, other electric-car sales paled in comparison with numbers from Tesla in September and for the third quarter of 2018. Is the Tesla Model 3 the top-selling car from an American brand?
Earlier this week we reported the Model 3 is possibly the fifth best-selling car in the U.S., based on Tesla’s update on deliveries. These Model 3 numbers released Tuesday are likely an anomaly; they’re based on a coordinated surge in U.S. deliveries in September. But also to be fair...

Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV vie for Canadian sales lead in August
Ahead of the final expiration of electric-car tax credits in Ontario, Canada, the Nissan Leaf posted its highest monthly sales total north of the border: 1,050 units. The number was more than double what Nissan sold in June and July, and still significantly more than its previous record of 906...

After a slow month in April, sales of the Nissan Leaf came roaring back in May. Nissan sold 1,576 Leafs in May, up from 1,171 the month before. The Leaf also had a record month in Canada, selling 906 units north of the border. It is worth noting that this achievement was accomplished with the redesigned Leaf's 151-mile battery. A 220-mile battery is still due out later this year, which will increase the car's functionality but boost its price too. Plug-in electric car sales in Feb better than Jan lows, winter doldrums not so bad (final update)
Sales of plug-in electric cars tend to be lower during the winter months, unlike the rest of the market, and February was little exception to that rule, though not as bad as it could have been. After a whiz-bang December that took 2017 sales to their highest-ever number—just under 200,000...

For six months, one in five Prius sales has been a plug-in hybrid
