When the new guy achieves something great, there will always be haters. But what happens when that new guy touts his achievement beyond the allowed guidelines? Tesla [NSDQ:TSLA] is the new guy in this scenario, and the company did just that this week in a release about the NHTSA's 5-star safety score for the Model S electric car.

In other news, diesel is becoming a big deal in the luxury car segment, particularly from the Germans. We drove both the new 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTEC and a range of Audi TDI models. But it's not all diesel fun and games in the luxury segment: Mercedes-Benz also revealed its new 2014 S500 Plug-In Hybrid, while BMW previewed the Concept X5 eDrive Plug-In Hybrid.

Meanwhile we drove the 2013 Honda Fit EV, and found that while it may only be a compliance car, it's one heck of a good electric car anyway.
