Less than a year ago, Vehicle Production Group seemed a success: The startup maker had built 2,500 MV-1 handicapped vans in a year, about one-quarter of them powered by natural gas. But this past April, VPG shut down due to a cash crunch that meant it couldn't make payroll. Now, its $50 million loan from the U.S. Department of Energy has been purchased by AM General for $3 million in an auction, giving AM General control of the company and its assets. AM General, better known as the company that built the HUMMER H1 as well as its military counterpart the Humvee, will continue to produce the...

Do Nissan, Tesla Sales Mean Other Makers Don't Need Electric Cars? You can break down car companies into three groups, depending on their electric-car activities. Is Tesla Model S The Best Way To Sell Politicians On Electric Cars? We've long known the best way to get people interested in electric cars is simply to let them drive or ride in them. It's easy enough to tell people they're quick, smooth and near-silent, but people are naturally skeptical of something they aren't familiar with. That includes politicians, but just...

North Carolina To Make Trip-Reduction 'Green' Laws IllegalOh, North Carolina: Are you cutting off your nose to spite your face? That's the impression at least some commentators have gained on learning of a state bill that will become law on August 25, with or without the signature of Gov. Pat McCrory. The bill would invalidate Durham County's Commute Trip...

The idea of banning internal combustion vehicles from city centers is nothing new, and similar schemes are expected to appear all over Europe over the next decade or so. Banning them from the road entirely though is a different matter--and it's one that the UK's Liberal Democrat party proposes should come into force by 2040. Predictably, the plans have caused a backlash with many in the UK--but there's far more to it than meets the eye. Much ado about nothing The first, important point to consider, is that 2040 is one heck of a long way away right now. 27 years in fact--and you only need look...

Tesla Takes The Lead On Dumping Door Mirrors For Video CamerasThe rear-view mirror has now been with us exactly 100 years, having first been introduced in 1914, and it hasn't changed much in all that time. It's a small area of mirrored glass--three of them now, actually--for the purpose of seeing through the rear window or along each side of the car without...

Why 'Compliance Cars' Turned Out To Be Good For Electric-Car BuyersElectric-car advocates spend a lot of time grumbling about compliance cars. But it turns out that even in low volumes, limited mostly to sales in one state, they've unexpectedly produced a benefit for all electric-car buyers: lower prices. Recent price reductions to "move the metal," as Detroit...

Will 100,000 Sign Petition For Tesla Motors Sales By Friday? On June 5, a Tesla Motors fan mounted what seemed like another quixotic effort to support Tesla in selling its electric cars directly to buyers. The petition at WhiteHouse.gov that he or she launched required 100,000 people to sign it within a month, by Friday, July 5. Suddenly, it seems that...

Tesla Motors has dodged two big bullets fired its way by New York and North Carolina legislatures and auto dealers. Last week, the New York State Senate and Assembly adjourned until January without acting on two bills pushed by state auto dealers that would have made it illegal to register a Tesla store in New York state. And yesterday, the North Carolina legislature backed off on a similar measure banning the sale of cars directly from the factory, the Tesla business model. The North Carolina law, also backed by the auto dealers lobby, could have even made it illegal for Tesla to send...

Smog-choked Chinese capital Beijing will be the first city in the country to introduce a new pollution tax. Following months of pollution far above safe levels, major Chinese cities have scrabbled to find a solution for improving air quality. Gasgoo reports Beijing will introduce a new tax this year, added to the cost of fuel, to dissuade drivers from using their cars quite as much, hopefully reducing pollution levels. The city currently charges a base 17 percent tax rate for every liter of gas. To this, a fixed tax of one yuan ($0.16) is added, as well as a 0.07 percent urban construction...
