We're barreling toward the 2011 New York Auto Show, where media days kick off in two weeks. While concept cars like the Lexus LF-Gh luxury hybrid sports sedan will get lots of attention, once the media leave, actual car buyers will be just as curious about fuel efficient cars with high gas mileage. Electric-Car Range Extender Engines: OK Now, Can Do BetterElectric cars like the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and 2011 Fisker Karma get around the problem of range anxiety the old-fashioned way: They use gasoline engines. They do it because the battery systems of pure electric vehicles are large, heavy, and expensive, but the range they produce is still...

An advance in battery technology could help push past one of the persistent criticisms of electric vehicles: the extended time needed to charge the battery. Researchers at the University of Illinois published a paper in Nature Nanotechnology on a change to the cathode of a battery that allows for rapid charging and discharging without a loss of capacity. They describe it in their abstract as follows: We demonstrate very large battery charge and discharge rates with minimal capacity loss by using cathodes made from a self-assembled three-dimensional bicontinuous nanoarchitecture consisting of...

The 2011 Denver Auto Show, a show that saw an increase in size and participation this year, closed on Sunday. The results proved what most of us in the auto industry felt about the show—there were more people and more manufacturers out on the floor. Officially, the 2011 Denver Auto Show was up in attendance over 20 percent and exceeded its record attendance year by two percent. The record attendance was probably driven by the interest in cars that we haven’t seen in either the press fleet or the general consumer population. That list of firsts included the Fiat 500, Nissan LEAF...

The popular U.K. motoring entertainment show Top Gear just can’t stay out of the spotlight at the moment. Just six days after Californian electric car automaker Tesla filed a legal case against the primetime Sunday night show for libel and malicious falsehood a broadcasting watchdog in the U.K. has exonerated Top Gear for making racist comments aimed at Mexicans. With U.K. national broadcasting watchdog Ofcom rejecting the complaints and commenting that the jibes were “justified by the context” we have to wonder if the show’s hosts, Messers Clarkson, May and Hammond...
