The day after it unveiled the 2014 Cadillac ELR range-extended electric luxury coupe, GM's North America chief Mark Reuss told attendees at a trade event that "the electric car is not dead." “That’s despite what you might hear, and despite what you might read about Americans not being ready for it," Reuss continued, "or about it being ‘under attack’ by local governments retracting incentives for it.” Why did Reuss feel the need to say what should be obvious--from sales data if nothing else? Largely because much of the media has confused underachieving...

So who buys a Nissan Leaf? Not, as you may be unsurprised to learn, the sort of person who doesn't really care what they buy, says one Nissan dealer. As Nashville Business Journal reports, Leaf customers are already pretty sure they want a Leaf when they walk onto the lot. "It's typically a very educated customer who's doing the Leaf," explains Broderick Alley of Downtown Nashville Nissan, "they come in hoping it fits their needs." Leaf customers often walk into the dealership knowing they want a Leaf, but speak to the dealer to ensure it's suitable for the mileage they drive, that they like...

For many months, Nissan has said it would sell 20,000 Leaf electric cars in the U.S. by next March. Sales rates didn't seem to support that, and now Nissan has conceded that it won't happen. CEO Carlos Ghosn said that number "would not be reached," in an interview on Bloomberg TV in Mexico City yesterday. The Detroit News reported Ghosn's remarks. Nissan sold 9,674 Leafs in the U.S. during 2011, and had long planned to double that number this year. But from January through October, it sold 6,791 Leafs--15 percent fewer than in the same period last year--although October sales spiked to 1,579...

For a time, the 2012 Mitsubishi i was the cheapest electric car on sale in the U.S. When smart announced its third-generation Electric Drive would retail from $25,750 for the coupe model, it made the $29,975 Mitsubishi look a bit expensive. Even if it does have two extra seats. Now, Town & Country Mitsubishi in Milwaukie, Oregon, is selling the Mitsubishi i at a discounted price, undercutting the smart. With a discount of $5,075, the 112 MPGe Mitsubishi can now be had for only $24,900. That's before you take any local and federal incentives into consideration, too. If you're able to...
