The 2016 Mazda CX-3 small crossover will start at $20,840 when it goes on sale in the U.S. this fall.

That price (which includes the $880 destination charge) buys a base Sport model with front-wheel drive.

All-wheel drive is available on all models for an additional $1,250.

Standard equipment includes a host of technology features, such as a 7-inch touchscreen display and the Mazda Connect smartphone-connectivity feature.

Upgrading to the mid-level CX-3 Touring model inflates the price to $22,840, and nets niceties like leatherette seating surfaces, heated seats and exterior mirrors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The top CX-3 trim level is the Grand Touring, which starts at $25,870.

That model adds a standard power moonroof, navigation, steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters, a head-up display, full-leather interior, and other features.

In addition, the $1,920 i-Activsense package for the Grand Touring includes more electronic safety features, such as radar cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automated brake assists.

All CX-3 models use the same powertrain, consisting of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine from Mazda's efficiency-focused Skyactiv line, paired to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The engine produces 146 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque.

It also helps the CX-3 get an EPA-rated 31 mpg combined (29 mpg city, 35 mpg highway) with front-wheel drive, or 29 mpg combined (27 mpg city, 32 mpg highway) with all-wheel drive.

However, U.S. buyers will miss out on the 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that will offered in Mazda's home market of Japan.

The company has discussed offering a diesel engine option in Mazda 6 mid-size sedan, but that project seems to have slipped down the list of priorities.

The gasoline-powered CX-3 will likely be more relevant to Mazda's U.S. success.

While diesels remain a small niche here, tiny crossovers represent one of the hottest segments at the moment.

Models like the Nissan Juke and Buick Encore helped pioneer the idea a few years ago, and have been joined by numerous competitors.

The Buick now has a twin--the Chevrolet Trax--while Honda introduced its Fit-based HR-V earlier this year.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles also has a pair of small crossovers--the Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade--that look very different, but share a platform.

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 goes on sale this fall.
