For those of you who are less familiar with the SCCA, they are a membership organization called the Sports Car Club of America. The club is one of the most active club racing organizations in America hosting several different types of racing including Road Track Racing, Solo Racing and RallyCross. Now personally, I have raced for several years in SCCA Road Racing, in a few different classes, earning a consistent 1st or 2nd in points. However, through a connection I made at work I got drafted into the world of SCCA Colorado RallyCross. RallyCross consists of coned off courses set up on dirt tracks of land. The goal is to complete the course in the shortest time possible without taking any penalties for hitting the cones. At typical race day consists of 6 runs that all accumulate to give each driver a total time for the day…yes you guessed it, the lowest time wins their class.

Back to the fun of this story. For the 2008 season I was recruited by the Colorado group’s chair to come run my Grandma’s 2002 Hyundai Elantra sedan automatic. Since RallyCross has a stock category I figured “what the heck!” What I wasn’t anticipating was the Ford Focus SVT (I think it is a 2002 as well) showing up on race day and of course entering into the Stock category. I knew then that this was going to be an interesting year. That first race, both for me and the Elantra, rewarded us with a 6th place finish (do to a missed gate)…RallyCross isn’t Road Racing, that I was sure of.

Was all lost you ask? Well, by mid-season the Hyundai had pulled off some 1st place finishes over the SVT Focus and much to my surprise was also holding the first place spot in points. The 2.0 liter Hyundai had proven itself to me and I no longer saw it as just a cheap commuter. I should add here that each race was a battle, with some races being won or lost by tenths or hundredths of a second. In the end, sadly, the Elantra fell to the SVT Focus and was awarded 2nd in points in the Colorado Region. Coming into the last race, the Elantra and the Focus were tied for points and truly only one could win.

The question now-- Will the battle continue for 2009? Stay tuned to find out!
