  • 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI Six-Month Road Test

Another small portion of Volkswagen's diesel scandal has been put to rest: the EPA announced its approval of modifications for 2012 through 2014 Passat TDI sedans. In total, 84,391 Volkswagen Passat TDI diesel vehicles are eligible to be modified and deemed compliant, should the existing owner choose to keep the car rather than sell it back to VW. These Passat TDIs are fitted with the earlier EA189 2.0-liter diesel engine and feature a urea tank for Selective Catalytic Reduction exhaust treatment. DON'T MISS: Brand-new 2015 Volkswagen TDI diesels back on sale after modifications Despite...

Volkswagen Passat GTE Plug-In Hybrid To Appear At Paris Motor Show

Now that German carmakers have started to work in earnest on plug-in hybrids, expect to see a whole lot more of them in the coming years--though not always in North America. Following the Volkswagen Golf GTE plug-in hybrid it unveiled last year, which is now on sale in Europe, the second VW to...

Volkswagen Passat TDI Smashes World Record With 78 MPG On U.S. Trip

Two drivers have set a new Guinness World Record for achieving the lowest fuel consumption in the lower 48 states in a non-hybrid car. Volkswagen Passat TDI Aims For 68 MPG On U.S. Road Trip

Volkswagen's 2013 Passat TDI is the most efficient diesel vehicle currently on sale. Its EPA-rated figures of 31 mpg city, 43 highway and 35 combined put it above a throng of other Volkswagen-Audi diesels, and make it a prime choice for frugal highway driving. But is 68 mpg within reach? If you're...

Want 40 MPG, Don't Want Hybrid? Here's Your Top Five Options

Look to the top of the fuel economy charts and, if you're not in the market for a plug-in vehicle, it's hybrids that typically top the list. Cars like the 2012 Toyota Prius C, which currently tops the list, sip gas whether in the city or on the highway, and ultimately they're the greenest way of...

  • 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Hybrids and, more recently, plug-in cars seem to have gotten all the green ink lately, leaving fans of fuel-sipping clean diesels out in the cold. Four makers sell diesel passenger vehicles in the U.S. for 2012: Audi and BMW joined longtime stalwarts Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen a few years back. And there are more coming next year, a strong-pulling 2013 Cruze diesel from Chevrolet and an unspecified model--most likely the new CX-5 crossover--from Mazda. But for 2012, the significant new entry is the Volkswagen Passat TDI. Not only is the all-new Passat larger and less expensive than its...

Smaller, More Efficient: VW Passat With 1.2-Liter 3-Cylinder Engine

How large an engine do you need in a mid-size car? Just a few years ago, the answer would have been a V-6 of 2.8 to 3.5 liters, perhaps with a base model offering a four of 2.4 to 2.8 liters. Then Hyundai announced in late 2009 that it would abandon V-6 engines altogether for its 2010 Sonata...

VW Commits To Launching Hybrid Option On Every Model: Report

It appears Volkswagen is copying Toyota’s commitment to offer a hybrid option on every model in its lineup, if the latest comments from the automaker’s CEO, Martin Winterkorn, are to be believed. The German auto giant sees hybrids, more specifically, range-extended plug-in hybrids, as...
