If you have been following the trends of both MINI and Fiat you might wonder if going even smaller is the new “thing” for 2011. Recently, we reported on the progress of the MINI Coupe and while not everyone is raving about the design it is still an interesting car. Fiat apparently thinks so as well, however they have beaten MINI to the punch with the Fiat 500 Coupe Zagato, which was reported yesterday to be on its way to the production line.

According to reports from AutoBlog the coupe’s production plans were confirmed by the head of Fiat, CEO Sergio Marchionne. As I alluded to earlier, this comes several months before the anticipated launch of the MINI Coupe. The details are actually fairly vague and there is no word yet on whether the car would come to the U.S. shores. It is most likely that Fiat would wait and see how the standard Fiat 500 sells prior to releasing a new, small version on American consumers. So for the moment the Fiat 500 Coupe is only expected to be sold in Europe and the production run is anticipated to be limited.

The light at the end of the small car tunnel, at least for U.S. Fiat fans, is that the American plant is already expected to produce electric and Abarth performance editions. That indicated that adding another model to the production line wouldn’t be that difficult, especially if sales were eminent. Be sure to keep your eyes pealed for the Fiat 500 later this year and stay tuned for more information on additional models as it comes across our desk here at AllSmallCars.com.
