Think plug-in hybrids are cutting edge? Get a load of this: the technology gurus at Nissan are studying ways to get that future electric car of yours to charge itself while you're driving. Gasoline and wall outlets never seemed so passé.

Senior Vice President of Nissan's technology department, Minoru Shinohara, believes it can be done. "Electric charging without a connection," he said, "it is very [futuristic], but we need zero emission vehicles. ... With India, Russia and China, there is a large increase in vehicles expected."

The automaker is considering onboard ultracapacitors to deliver the electricity needed to move these vehicles. While road ready technology is a ways off, the concept is gaining traction. Several companies, including the Ukranian based APowerCap Technologies are currently developing ultracapacitor car chargers.
