When it comes to compact cars, the Mazda 3 stands out due to its handsome looks and sporty dynamics.

Mazda has set out to improve both of these traits with an updated version of its popular compact.

The updated Mazda 3 was unveiled today in Japan and has been confirmed for sale in the United States later this year as a 2017 model.

The visible changes made to the car are subtle and primarily constitute some tweaks made to the front end and some improved, more premium looking materials in the cabin.

We also know that there’s a new technology called G-Vectoring Control, which falls under the new Skyactiv-Vehicle Dynamics banner for Mazda’s next-generation chassis technology.

G-Vectoring Control adjusts the level of engine torque based on steering inputs in order to control the vertical load on each axle and thus improve traction.

Mazda says this helps improve the handling while also making the forces from changes in acceleration to be smoother.

Unfortunately there hasn’t been any mention of specifications for North American markets.

The current Mazda 3 is available as a sedan or hatch and offers a 155-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder as the entry point and a 184-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder above this.

The most fuel-efficient version is the 2.0-liter sedan with a 6-speed manual. Its EPA-rated fuel economy comes in at 30 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined.

While most Mazdas these days have exceeded their EPA ratings in our real-world tests, a 2014 Mazda 3 S Grand Touring five-door hatchback with the larger 2.5-liter engine returned an indicated 30.9 mpg against a combined rating of 32 mpg.
