  • Cute AND Clever: Chrysler's Coming Green Innovations

Chrysler's on the skids right now, no doubt about it. June sales plummeted 42 percent, and some consider its takeover by--errr, sorry, partnership with--Italy's Fiat to be the blind leading the lame.

But Fiat is far from the company it was 20 years ago, when it folded its tents and snuck out of the US, leaving handfuls of rusting, unreliable hatchbacks strewn across the landscape.

Today's Fiat brings at least two green innovations to Chrysler: the fantastic Fiat 500 minicar, in four variations, and MultiAir, a new engine technology said to boost fuel economy at least 10 percent.

Fiat has now confirmed that Chrysler...

  • The Few, The Proud...The Green? Marines Clean Up Camp Pendleton Wheels

Every time we make a joke involving the US Marine Corps, first we check it with our friend Cap'n Connors, a former Marine.

With multiple deployments under his belt, and much multicolored art under his skin, the cap'n is our source for all things having to do with the most profane of the armed forces.

Even he was impressed at the steps his service has taken to green its Camp Pendleton base along the southern California coast. And a substantial portion of their efforts go toward alternative-fueled vehicles.

Most prominent are two Chevrolet Equinox Fuel-Cell Vehicles, the popular midsize crossover converted to electric power provided by the...

  • Chrysler PT Cruiser Survives Through 2011

We're all irrationally fond of some cars, and one of ours is the 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser. Technically, it's a small minivan, but the retro-styled gangster look has always disguised that fact completely. And, it's a remarkably practical car.

Now comes the news that Chrysler reversed its previous death order, and will keep the PT Cruiser in production through 2011. Hurray!

So what makes us so fond of the PT Cruiser?

    PROS

Remarkably large and capacious interior for its size Versatility in hauling people, stuff, or any combination of the two High, upright seating position with superb visibility Relatively small size and maneuverability Cool... Read More

First Drive: 2010 Ford Transit Connect

As we've written several times, we like the idea of the 2010 Ford Transit Connect: A small, fuel-efficient van for use in urban areas or where a full-size delivery van isn't needed.

It's meant for smaller, lighter loads where a full-size van would be overkill. Think your local florist or deli, not a stone supply yard.

With fuel economy rated at 22 mpg city / 25 mpg highway, the Transit Connect does far better than Ford's best Econoline E-150 full-size van, whose 225-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 returns just 14 mpg city / 18 mpg highway.

Now we've had a chance to drive it through the challenging streets of New York City, where its compact size...

First Drive: 2012 Nissan EV Prototype

Here at Green Car Reports, the growing group of electric-vehicle prototypes we've driven now includes the Nissan EV--or at least its "production intent" powertrain, meaning the final battery pack, electric drive motor, and inverter.

Like the 2012 Ford Focus EV mule and the 2011 Chevrolet Volt prototype, our Nissan "EV" was a future electric powertrain mounted in a body with little resemblance to the production car.  In this case, the company used a right-hand-drive model of the last-generation Nissan Cube (never sold in North America).

The actual electric car Nissan plans to launch will be unveiled "soon," perhaps at the Frankfurt Motor...

Driving Detroit's Electric Future: 2011 Chevrolet Volt AND 2012 Ford Focus EV

Well, the big day has come and gone: Now we've driven a 2011 Chevrolet Volt prototype. More than 18 months before buyers can walk into a Chevy dealer and test one, we got behind the wheel.

What's the Volt like? It's remarkably ... unremarkable.

And we mean that as praise. General Motors has managed to build a radical car that seems so normal it'll make the average American driver completely comfortable with electric drive.

For half an hour today, we drove a Volt "mule"--a Volt powertrain installed in the body of a 2010 Chevrolet Cruze subcompact--around the roads of the GM Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. It uses "production-intent"...
