As teaser images go, it doesn't leave us much to go on.

But Toyota's Hybrid R logo, in familiar Hybrid Synergy Drive blue and with the smallest hint of a checkered flag graphic, suggests the company's next concept will be rather more racy than normal.

Toyota will show the Hybrid R Concept at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show in September, to showcase its new Toyota Hybrid System-Racing (THS-R) technology.

That's technology inspired by Toyota's high-profile assault on world championship endurance racing, in the TS030 Hybrid race car. The company's engineers have apparently been watching development of the race car closely, suggesting it was only a matter of time before some of that technology--particularly with regards to energy recovery--found its way onto humbler vehicles.

Beyond the Hybrid R graphic, little else is known about the car--though more teaser images are likely to emerge before the show, as they have for Toyota's previous concepts.

There's a chance the new car will preview the next-generation of Toyota's Supra sports car, a vehicle expected to use a hybrid drivetrain in its next iteration.

Toyota previously put a hybrid Supra project on hold when the global economic crisis hit in 2008, but with rivals such as Acura launching a hybrid NSX sports car, it wouldn't be a surprise if Toyota was working on a rival.

To know for sure, we'll have to wait until September 10, when the Hybrid R Concept makes its debut in Frankfurt. Head over to our Frankfurt Auto Show page for more from the show.
