Coda is one of America's newest auto brands, and now, it's undergoing a time-honored rite of passage: its first official recall.

According to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Coda recall stems from improperly installed side-curtain airbags. Although the bulletin doesn't explain the specifics of the installation flaw, NHTSA makes it clear that the problem is severe enough to prevent the sedan's airbags from inflating. That, in turn, increases the risk of injury to occupants during a collision.

The upside to the recall -- if it can be said to have one -- is that Coda is not yet a big seller in the U.S. As a result, the recall affects only 78 vehicles.

Coda hasn't yet said when the company will issue recall notices to owners, but given the severity of the problem and the small size of the recall, we'd expect it to happen soon. Once owners receive the notice, they'll be able to take their vehicles to Coda dealer, who will "inspect and correct the side curtain airbag installations as needed, free of charge".

If you have questions about the recall, we encourage you to contact Coda at 855-464-2632 and ask about recall #R84001 (the only one on the books). Alternately, you can ring NHTSA at 888-327-4236 and ask about campaign #12V409000.

  1. That is the issue so far with Coda. Quality, safety and reliability are completely unknown. Plus the price is fairly high. The massive market competition will mean that CODA will be struggling to survive.

    Bad stuff?

  2. It's funny how little we're hearing from Coda, it's almost like they want to be an unknown brand.
