This morning, Mitsubishi North America announced an official recall of certain 2012 Mitsubishi i electric cars after it became apparent that there may be an incompatibility between the air bag sensors and the car’s on-board diagnostics system.

According to the official recall notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website , the problem affects some cars made between November 4, 2011 and December 22, 2011.

In affected cars, the side and curtain air bags may be deactivated by the car’s self-diagnostic software, illuminating the SRS warning lamp on the dashboard.

Consequentially, in a collision, the side and curtain air bags may not deploy.

Mitsubishi has said it will notify owners of affected cars, while work to replace the faulty air bag sensors with ones compatible with the car’s software will be fitted free of charge.

At the current time, Mitsubishi hasn’t indicated how long the recall is expected to take, but concerned owners can contact their local Mitsubishi i dealer, or call Mitsubishi free on 1-800-222-0037.
