Electric motorcycle manufacturer Zero Motorcycles has announced the recall of certain model year 2009 and 2010 Zero S and Zero DS motorcycles, to replace the front brake caliper bracket. Under heavy braking, the original front brake caliper bracket may be subject to deformation, which can cause brake pad misalignment and reduced front brake performance.

Specific models affected are:

  • 2009 Zero S motorcycles built from September 2, 2009 to December 22, 2009
  • 2010 Zero S motorcycles built from February 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011
  • 2009 Zero DS motorcycles built from July 27, 2009 to December 28, 2009
  • 2010 Zero DS motorcycles built from January 20, 2010 to March 31, 2011

The recall is expected to begin prior to the end of May, once dealers receive supplies of the redesigned brake caliper bracket. Dealers will replace the original front brake caliper bracket with the re-designed one, and will replace the front brake pads to ensure proper alignment between brake pads and rotor. Front brake fluid will also be checked for signs of overheating, and dealers will flush and replace front brake fluid as necessary. Owners with questions or concerns can contact Zero Motorcycles at (888) 786-9376, extension 45, or they may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236.

  1. Sorry to hear it. Nobody's perfect, as all of the major car companies have recalls all the time. I hope that there is no serious fallout from this and that they go on to ever greater success.

    Bad stuff?

  2. Noel, the good news is that the recall involved a conventional part, not something related to the electric drive system. Zero is an innovative company, and I think there will be very little fallout from this.
